Issue #483 - Sunday, July 18, 2021
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- What's 1g/watt? It's when a grower can grow one gram of cannabis for every watt of electricity in your grow light's rating. Although you can surpass 1g/watt, it's seen as the standard for judging the efficiency and productivity of your grow. Today, we're going to show you how to achieve this feat at will.
- Does blackstrap molasses (a common supplement for flowering cannabis plants) contain harmful chemicals? If not, what is the giant warning on the jar about?!
- It's a week of extremes! Some of the plants in this week's "Trophy Pictures of the Week" are huge, and others operate on a tiny scale! Get ready for colas the size of a coke can and a plant that's barely bigger than a coke can. The best part is that you'll end up wanting all of them, no matter the size!

How to Produce 1 Gram of Cannabis per Watt of Electricity

What Is “1 Gram Per Watt” and Why Do Indoor Growers Want It?
As a cannabis grower, you may have come across this term: “1 Gram/Watt”
What does it mean?
It’s an unofficial measurement for indoor growers that refers to the yield you get from a certain wattage of light. For example if you’re using a 600W grow light, yielding 1 gram/watt would mean you harvested 600 grams of bud. If you only harvested 300 grams, it means you got 0.5 grams/watt (300 grams divided by 600 watts).
Just to put things into perspective, even 0.5 gram/watt is considered a good yield, so going for twice that is pretty crazy!
A yield of one gram per watt is considered the “upper limit” of what’s possible with indoor grow lights (though it can be beaten)! An average-to-good grow yields about 0.5 grams/watt.
One gram per watt is meant to be a sort of “upper limit” of what to expect from indoor grow lights as far as yields. Although it’s possible to get even better yields (certain LED grow lights combined
with the right skills can produce 2 grams/watt and beyond), even getting close requires preparation and a good setup. Most people are not going to put in the time, effort, or money for this and that’s okay.
In fact, many hobbyist growers aren’t as concerned with yields as much as making sure they’re getting the effects they want from their buds… and in my opinion, that’s the right frame of mind. But even if you don’t care that much about yields, it can still be fun to try to beat your own record.
This tutorial explains how to use the concept of yields for electricity to your advantage, and then I’ll teach you how to consistently produce 1 gram per watt yourself!

Does Blackstrap Molasses Contain Harmful Chemicals?
|
|
Growers have been giving blackstrap molasses to cannabis plants (as a supplement in the water) for decades. But could it be dangerous?
Many cannabis growers use unsulfured blackstrap molasses as a supplement to improve bud quality. Typically they’ll add a small amount to the water they give their plants (for example 1/2 tsp/gallon during last 1-3 weeks before harvest). Some soil growers also give small amounts of molasses to feed the microbes and microorganisms in a living soil
or super soil. Marijuana growers have been happily using molasses for decades.
That’s why we were shocked when we received the following picture from a reader showing that blackstrap molasses has a warning on it about harmful chemicals....

"I am growing my first plant this year and have read a reasonable amount on the web but your articles are done so well it’s just so helpful and informative. Thank you for taking the time to post. I appreciate it."

I don't print out our testimonials and stick them on the fridge, but I'm considering it now. ~Sirius

Lol, I also call them my babies. It makes it a little weird when I have to harvest them. 😂 ~Sirius

"OK this guy is a Mozart auto flower seed that I started from seed and ever since it grew up it's been bad. Ever since she's been growing she's not getting any bigger I don't know if she's done or if I should try to turn to another plant or what I've done some research on the Mozart Strain
doesn't say anything about miniature plants what do I do with this thing what is it"
~Jyd
My guess is that this is just a tiny little weed plant. "Runts" are especially common with autoflowering strains because the plant starts automatically flowering after a few weeks and stops getting bigger. That means a slow start often results in tiny plants. That being said, this is the cutest runt I have ever seen. 10/10 runt cannabis plant. 🔟

Uh oh, it looks like someone left the garden of Eden in your backyard. You might want to look into that. 😂 ~Sirius
