Issue #489 - Sunday, August 29, 2021
Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- Is it possible to grow great weed when you start with good seeds? Of course it is! But is it possible to grow great weed with bagseed? Although it's less common, it's possible. So is it better to use good seeds that your purchase, or bagseed you find? Today we're going to answer the question with compelling evidence!
- Interested in growing American strains? We recently discovered a local San Diego seed bank called Seed Supreme, and had an excellent ordering and delivery experience with them. Before we add them as a recommended seed bank to the website, I wanted to see if any of our wonderful readers have tried them yet.
- Learn what's in store for our next grow journal featuring auto-flowering strains grown under LED grow lights!
- The theme for the (amazing) trophy pics of the week is "freakshow". We have large plants, even larger ones, that look like they got lost and ended up in the wrong newsletter (you'll see what I mean). There's also a couple of very normal-looking plants, but I like to think they're hiding a secret.

Bag Seed vs Hype Seed: Is it worth it to buy cannabis seeds?
🌱🏆🤔
|
|
You found some cannabis seeds! Yay! Should you grow them? Or should you buy cannabis seeds online thought a seed bank? What about sources on social media or even at a dispensary? How important are the marijuana seeds you
start with?
Sometimes you get lucky with plants grown from found seeds. This bag seed produce excellent quality buds (though weirdly, the starting weed was not purple at all)
Unpredictability is the biggest downside to seeds you find in your weed. I have seen incredible grow results with “bag seed” or seeds growers find in their weed, like the plant pictured above. The higher the quality of the starting weed, the greater
the chance the seeds will produce good buds, too. That being said, bag seed can have problems including bud quality, poor germination rates, the potential for hermies, and unpredictable growth patterns.
Poor Quality Seeds = Confidence Killer!
Using random cannabis seeds (even from dank bud) can produce unpredictable results. Plants may grow wild or produce small airy buds with low potency, even if the original weed was dense and potent.
Pros of Using “Bag Seed” (seeds you find in your weed)
- Seeds are free (buying cannabis seeds can get expensive!)
- Easy (you already have seeds in hand)
- May produce good bud if it came from good buds
5 Cons of Using Bag Seed
- Bud quality may not be as good as the weed it came in
- Potential for poor germination rates since seeds likely weren’t stored properly
- Unpredictable growth patterns – for example, plants may get tall or take a long time for buds to mature before harvest
- Potential for male plants (male plants don’t produce buds while feminized seeds produce all-female, all bud-producing plants)
- Hermies are common (hermie plants produce seedy buds, which is often how seeds got in your bud in the first place)
Today we'll investigate those potential issues so you can make an informed decision. Let’s do a quick deep dive!
Have You Heard of Seed Supreme?

|
After placing an order we were pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to pay for the order compared to some other seed banks, and then even more pleased when the seeds showed up at our door within 2 weeks. A lot faster than most seeds from overseas.
We waited a few months and did another anonymous order and again had an excellent ordering and delivery experience.
Many of you have asked about trustworthy American seed banks and we are considering adding Seed Supreme to our recommended seed sources page.
But before we did that, I just wanted to reach out to our awesome newsletter subscribers and see if any of you had ordered from them before, or had any experiences to share. Just hit the reply button and let us know what you think. If there are any other particular seed banks you absolutely love, please let us know that, too. As always, I appreciate your help. You are the ones driving the website!

I grew these autoflowering plants in Spring 2020 and was impressed with the bud quality. Auto-flowering genetics had come a long way since I grew "Lowryder" in 2010, but auto-flowering strains exploded in popularity during the pandemic. The home growing world is coming to a place where auto-flowering strains may start to
overtake their photoperiod counterparts in popularity and strain choice.
|
The results are in!
Last week I asked you all what you wanted to see us grow next and received an overwhelming number of emails. Thank you! I love to hear what you're thinking because I want to grow the plants you want to see.
#1 Takeaway: you want to see more auto-flowering strains.
I was a little surprised that nearly every grower who mentioned strain requested to see more auto-flowering strains. It makes sense when I think about it because autos produce a much faster harvest compared to photoperiod strains, while removing the need to think about light schedules or dark periods. They can be a great choice for
beginners and the quality of auto-flowering buds has improved dramatically over the last decade. Bud quality and yields now meets or sometimes even beats the buds of popular photoperiod strains. Therefore, my next grow will feature auto-flowering strains from a few different breeders.
#2 Takeaway: LEDs are the most popular grow light BY FAR.
A few growers would like to learn more about CMH/LECs and UV light, but the overwhelming majority of you want to see plants growing under LED grow lights. We may do another CMH vs LED grow journal or a comparison with supplemental UV light in the future, but for this grow we're going to stick to LEDs.
#3 Takeaway: You want to see different types of plant training in action.
There's a lot of controversy about plant training (forcing plants to grow into a particular size or shape) and how they affect yields and bud quality. In response, our next grow will feature untrained vs trained plants. I personally have had excellent results topping and training autoflowering strains, but some growers believe you get better results by leaving them
alone. Let's test it to get to the bottom of this mystery once and for all.
Summary of next grow journal
- Feature multiple auto-flowering strains from different breeders
- Feature LED grow lights - I'll be using Electric Sky 300s (they're my personal favorite LEDs so far and readers who've written in have been getting good results, too)
- Compare Trained vs Untrained Plants - One tent will feature auto-flowering plants that are completely untrained. After germination they'll get water, nutrients, light, and that's it. Otherwise I will leave them alone. The other tent will have the same auto-flowering strains, but these ones will be trained normally (top them above the 5th node and spread the branches out as they grow to produce multiple main buds).
Since auto-flowering plants are always grown from seed, unfortunately I can't do this test with clones, so this will be more of an informal experiment. But after years of always training plants I'm excited to see what they do if you just leave them alone to do their thing. Is training worth the trouble? We'll find out together!
Love,
Nebula

"Great news letter as always. I would really like to see a comparison grow with seaweed."
~Abraham
Seaweed works great with cannabis in my experience, but it would be cool to do a side-by-side test. Thanks! ~Sirius
"Just want to say thank you thank you this site is my bible couldn’t. Grow well without you guys"

"Mint cookie dough and apple fritter outdoor greenhouse grow. Had some issues put them out early; had to reveg but they turned around nicely and are going with season now."
~Craig
It's always good to hear when a reveg is on purpose and goes as planned. Well done. 🎉 ~Sirius
"My Marijuana plant sativa unknown strain taking more then 6 months no signs of flowers.....ummmm...what's wrong?"
~Wes
Uh oh...does anyone know what the problem is in this case? The answer is below the pic.
Answer: This plant isn't getting 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness. If cannabis plants don't get their 12-hour nap every day, they get grumpy and won't flower. Don't worry, I already told the grower the issue. 👍
~Sirius
P.S. Note the size of the chair in the back. I'd bet this plant is getting close to 6 feet tall. 😲

~PeterThePotGrower
Believe it or, this is a cannabis plant! This is a strain known as Freakshow and it produces buds without looking like a "regular" cannabis plant. This is one of the most stealthy cannabis plants you can grow. ~Sirius

- GWE's Best Cannabis Seed Banks - You can successfully grow top-notch weed from bagseed, it's just not as likely to happen. These seedbanks sell an overwhelming number of strains that will impress anyone's tastes. On a side note: we're testing new seedbanks and at least one is in the US!
- Do Feminized Cannabis Seeds Make Hermies? - A "hermie" is a term used to describe a cannabis plant that has male and female sex parts. That means they can pollinate your female plants and you'll end up a bucket load of seeds...that you won't want to grow! Learn more about hermies at the link above.
- Fail-Proof Cannabis Germination Method in Soil or Coco - Expensive seeds + poor germination rates = angry, angry growers. No one wants to waste seeds, even if it's bagseed. Make sure you have a reliable method for germinating seeds so you can keep that blood pressure nice and low.
- Male vs Female Cannabis Plants - I've received a heartbreaking number of emails that go like this: "Hey GWE, I know this page is for trophy pics, but could you please tell me if this is a girl plant?". The worst part is that there's enough pollen around to ruin any plants in the area by the time they ask. Learn to tell the
difference between male and female plants. It's worth it!
