Dear Fellow Grower,
In today's issue...
- You may have heard the term "Fertigation" and assumed it was a new, extremely difficult cannabis training technique or something. It turns out that fertigation is a lot less complicated than you think it is. In fact, you'll learn everything you need to know about it in one sitting. Nice!
- What does it mean if you find seeds in your weed, and how do you prevent seedy buds? Find out today!
- Some major changes in the seed-buying world. Get the latest news!
- Seedlings are bathing in the gentle pink light of an LED grow light... Check out the latest update on Nebula's auto-flowering grow journal!
- We've received so many more trophy pictures this week, but I had to pick ones that called to me personally. Some of these are big plants, but some of them have an aesthetic that makes them great on their own. I think you'll enjoy these pics as much as I enjoyed picking them out!

What is “fertigation”
and is it good for cannabis plants?
🌊🌳🚿👩🏫

|
I recently received this message:
“What is fertigation, and is it good for cannabis plants? Do you need to fertigate coco coir?”
I decided to share the answer with everyone, as marijuana fertigation is a newly popular topic.
What is fertigation?
Fertigation means providing nutrients in the water you give to your cannabis plants (irrigating plants with fertilizer). Plants typically grow faster when they get nutrients from the water as opposed to having to seek out nutrients in soil. Any grower using nutrients is already fertigating their plants.
Fertigation just means giving nutrients in the water (“fertigation” stands for irrigating plants with fertilizer)
What is high-frequency fertigation?
A popular new cannabis growing technique is "high-frequency fertigation". High-frequency fertigation is exactly what it sounds like: giving nutrient water to cannabis plants on a frequent basis. For example, watering plants multiple times a day with nutrient water, often with drip-irrigation (automatic watering).
This is typically done with plants grown in coco coir (ground coconut husks) plus perlite (little white rocks that create air spaces). The coco/perlite combo has air and water-holding properties that help prevent cannabis plants from getting overloaded or over-watered
High-frequency fertigation means frequently giving nutrient water to your plants (up to 5 times a day). When done properly, plants grow faster.
What is the advantage of high-frequency fertigation?
Plants tend to grow faster when they’re getting a constant supply of nutrients, water, and oxygen.
Why don't plants get overwatered?
"Overwatering" is the result of lack of oxygen at the plant's roots. When roots are starved of oxygen, plants get droopy, grow slowly, and often show nutrient deficiencies.
However, with the high-frequency fertigation technique, plants are grown in a special grow medium (coco coir mixed with lots of airy perlite) which gives roots plenty of oxygen even when the grow medium is soaked. As a result, plants grow extremely fast at rates comparable to growing cannabis in hydroponics.
With high-frequency fertigation cannabis growers usually use tubing to deliver water directly to cannabis plant roots on a schedule (typically by putting the water pumps on a timer)
Is high-frequency fertigation the best choice for coco? The answer is simple...

What causes seeds in buds while growing cannabis?
|
|
There's a seed in my bud!
What does it mean to find seeds in your marijuana buds? Is it something to be worried about? This is something that happens while buds are forming in the flowering stage, but can be prevented with the right steps. Learn more below.
Sometimes you don't see the seeds until they fall out of your buds
|
What causes seeds?
Seedy buds are the result of pollination. What does that mean? Cannabis buds are flowers. Like other flowers, they make seeds when pollinated. Cannabis buds get pollinated when they come into contact with cannabis pollen while the buds are forming.
Seeds happen when pollen gets on the hairs (pistils) of buds as they’re forming. In other words, seeds in weed are caused by pollination.
This bud is full of fat seeds because pollen got on the pistils during bud development.
There are three main principles when it comes to preventing seeds...
(plus learn how pollination affects bud yields and potency)
These fat calyxes are full of seeds. Some of the seeds are already peeking their little heads out.
What's the deal with seed sources lately?
|
|
Seeds let you get the newest and best genetics all over the world... when the seed banks are operating normally.
There is a big company that is buying out many long-time trustworthy cannabis seed banks. I recommend avoiding these seed banks for now until more is learned about them.
Avoid these seed banks for now (some of these used to be trustworthy, but seem to be under new management)
- Crop King Seeds
- MJ Seeds Canada
- Rocket Seeds
- Sunwest Genetics
- Mary Jane's Garden
- Beaver Seeds
- Sonoma Seeds
|
The latest victim? (possibly)
- It's not confirmed yet but I think the long-time trusty and well-proven Seedsman website may have been purchased by the same company. It has been recently revamped and has a new website layout that seems suspiciously similar to the seed banks above that were just purchased.
- We are dedicated to keeping a current and relevant list of trustworthy seed banks so we have taken Seedsman off our seeds page while we investigate this further.

I love the sight of seeds germinating. Look at the little round leaves emerging on the right :)
Did you know? A seedling's first leaves were fully formed inside the seed before the seed even germinated. The leaves are released when the seed splits open (like the seedling on the right in the above pictures).
Update on Nebula's Autoflowering Grow Journal

Seeds have sprouted into seedlings. I kept them in seedling plugs (Rapid Rooters) until every seedling had opened their leaves, then put the young plants in paper cups. I’ve kept the 3 best seedlings from each strain to give them a few more days to develop before putting them
in their final 5-gallon pots.
I aim to pick the most similar two seedlings from each strain, and put one plant of each strain in in each tent.
Since these cannabis plants are growing from seed instead of clones (all auto-flowering plants always start from seed), they’re like siblings as opposed to twins. That means the experiment is not as precise as it would be for clones. However, I am matching the seedlings as best as possible for the purposes of the experiment and I think it's going to be fun and informative to see how the autoflowering plants react to plant training vs growing naturally. Luckily,
they all seem to be developing at about the same pace so far.
Next week plants should be in 5-gallon pots with one plant of each strain in each tent. Then the real fun begins!
What is the grow light, nutrients, grow tent, etc.?
Here’s a picture of my last grow in this setup. I’m using the same tent, LED panel, grow medium, pots, nutrients, etc.

Watch Out for Seed Scams!
|
|
Always take a second to double-check the source before sending money to anyone on social media
Did you know there are seed scammers out there?
It's sad but true. There are awful people, especially on social media, that are targeting cannabis growers and taking their money then disappearing. It often starts with a direct message offering to sell you seeds. The accounts typically pretend to be a legitimate company but something is off...
If this happens, watch out! Legitimate seed companies wait for you to contact them. Someone who contacts you first to sell seed by direct message is almost certainly a scammer.
Where should you go for seeds?
Contact the seed breeder through their official social media account or check out their website. Look for a newsletter signup because many breeders do "seed drops" via email only.
Otherwise... These seed sources have been getting the best reviews recently from our readers.
