Air circulation may not seem like a glamorous aspect of growing weed, yet this is something you will need to master if you want to take your growing skills and your results to the next level.

Now there are 5 main components to creating perfect air circulation in your grow room, and Sammy Spade will walk you through the whole thing...

These happy marijuana buds show the power of good air ventilation in your grow room

While often overlooked (though only by the most clueless of back-room farmers), a crucial element of any indoor garden is proper air circulation.

Some new growers who fail to research indoor gardening before trying their hand actually skip this step, thinking all they need is light, dirt, and water.

An oversight that leads to disaster.

Plants need fresh air to survive and thrive-they need oxygen, just like you and me.  An air circulation system also keeps temperatures at bay by removing hot air and pulling in fresh, cool air from outside, and it removes water from the air to control humidity.

And finally, the constant movement of air makes it more difficult for fungus and bugs to settle in on your plants.

Let's go over some of the components needed to set up a simple air circulation system so you can maintain control over your indoor growing environment like one of the pros.

Exhaust Fan for growing weed

1.  Exhaust Fan

The first component of your air circulation system is an exhaust fan.  As discussed above, the air in your room needs to be recycled continuously or heat and humidity will build up, and as you pull all that stale, foul air out of the room, fresh air rushes in to replace it.  Ask your local gardening store how big of a fan you need for your room (this typically depends on the number of grow lights and the size of the room).

Mount your exhaust fan on the ceiling because hot air rises up and accumulates up there, and then run ducting (make sure to buy the insulated) from the fan through the ceiling to a vent somewhere in your attic (it's important to actually vent it outside rather than in the attic or the humidity may build up and cause problems with rot and mold).

You can also run the ducting out a window, but if the window is in the room, you should probably construct a box around it and then run the ducting into the box.

Once your system is set up, it pulls the air through the ducting and expels it from the room every time the exhaust fan kicks on.

2.  Intake

You may need an intake fan as well, but many growers will be fine without one, finding that a simple intake vent, which allows fresh air to be pulled in every time the exhaust fan comes on, gets the job done.  Sometimes even this intake hole proves unnecessary - rooms typically have plenty of cracks where air can be pulled in, even if you can't see them.

Try out your fan out with all the lights on before deciding whether to cut an intake hole or not.

3.  Oscillating Fans

A grow room also needs the air to circulate within the room, which properly mimics the realities of more volatile outdoor environments.  Oscillating fans can be mounted on the walls to provide a strong artificial wind in your room.  This not only makes it difficult for harmful fungus and pests to take root but also forces plant stalks to grow thick and strong as the plant adapts to conditions.

4.  Thermostat/ Timer Combo

Control your air circulation system with a thermostat.

The oscillating fans are left on at all times, but the exhaust fan should come off and on as needed, kicking on whenever the room gets too hot.

You plug the fan into the thermostat, which sends an electric current when a preset maximum temperature is reached.  Some thermostats even come with a convenient timer that allows different temperature ranges for "night" and "day."

In extremely cold regions, high-tech systems may include heaters as well, which would be activated by a preset minimum temperature rather than maximum.  Another optional feature is a humidistat, allowing for further control in situations where humidity presents a problem even.

Dehumidifier for your grow room
5.  Dehumidifier and Filter (Optional)

Two other components for maintaining the air in your indoor growing environment are the dehumidifier and the air filter. For dry environments a humidifier is also necessary.

The dehumidifier is probably only necessary if you are having problems with high humidity, so wait until after you've tested and monitored your room, with plants and soil inside, to figure it out.  The filter may become necessary if you are growing a particularly aromatic plant, like medical marijuana, and don't want it to become a nuisance in the house (and neighborhood).

All these components together are all you need to properly control the air in your indoor garden, but even if the system seems simple, don't underestimate the necessity.  It goes a long way towards preventing huge problems and will make or break your garden.

Plan your system out ahead of time and set up all the crucial components before you plant your room.
