In last week's newsletter, Sirius covered how to set up a MH/HPS grow light system for growing marijuana. 

In response, many of you wrote in asking what GrowWeedEasy.com thinks about growing marijuana with LED grow lights, as compared to HID lights. 

The questions we received were great, because LED grow lights have many benefits over HID lights (lower electricity usage, lower heat output, etc) but there is also a lot of controversy about LED grow lights and how well they work. 

The sad truth is that some of the LED grow lights being sold today simply don't work well for growing marijuana.

But how to tell the difference? Which grow lights work, and which ones don't?

Earlier this year, I partnered with fellow grower endive to write an article which summarizes our experiences with LEDs, and this was one of our most popular articles.

In my experience, the only LED grow light system that comes close to HID grow lights (like MH and HPS lights) is the Pro Grow series. 

While these LED grow lights definitely use less electricity and produce less heat than an HPS light, they are expensive to buy initially, and seem to be tied with HPS lights for yields. 

If you use a lot of electricity, the ProGrow LED grow lights will definitely save you money in the long run.

However, I believe that, with the way things are going, 2013 is going to be the year that LEDs truly take the throne for best marijuana grow light with biggest yields. The number of great LED grow light models out there is growing, and so is the number of companies offering LEDs.

I for one am excited about what 2013 will bring!

Now, the buds that we love only grow as flowers on female marijuana plants. Therefore, most growers are interested in growing only female plants.

The trouble is that when you start with regular seeds, all young marijuana plants look the same, but about half of them will end up being male. Unfortunately, there's no easy way to tell who the boys are before the plants reach the flowering stage.

That's why many seed banks now offer "feminized seeds" which means that 99.9% of all the resulting plants will be female. For a small-time grower with just a few plants, starting with feminized seeds can save an incredible amount of space and wasted time/effort.

Yet many growers don't realize they can make feminized seeds at home. 

In fact, with a simple process involving a special substance called colloidal silver (which you can also easily make at home), you can grow your own unlimited amount of feminized seeds, just like the pros.

What's more, you can actually start an all-female breeding program, allowing you to have the fun of breeding without ever having to deal with a single male plant.

For indoor growers, generally the best way to grow your plants is short and bushy. This ensures that all parts of the plant are able to get light, makes better use of you grow lights, and will gift you with multiple fat colas, instead of just one fat cola on a Christmas tree shaped plant.

Growing short and bushy plants allows you to take advantage of smaller grow spaces, such as cabinets or small closets, and often give the greatest yields for the amount of electricity, light, and time that you put in as a grower.

While it's true that your marijuana strain will have a big effect on how your plant grows, as the head gardener, you also have many tools as your disposal that allow you to basically control exactly how your plant grows.

Many growers focus on nutrients, lights, CO2, and basically tools you can buy to increase your yields. Yet many growers don't realize that there are actually many free techniques which work just as good or even better for increasing yields. Defoliation is a controversial technique that can do that for you.

You see, defoliation is the process of strategically removing leaves to improve growth structure and increase yields. 

I never understood how this could possibly help your plant ("don't they need those leaves?") until I decided to try this technique for myself.

1. Ever more LED grow light vendors will focus on serving the marijuana community by continuing to refine their lights to beat HID grow lights and get the biggest yields possible
   
   
2. States and countries around the world will continue to become more lenient towards marijuana growers (legalization is happening all around us!)
   
   
3. More companies will be serving the marijuana growing communities. Gardening stores are expanding everywhere, new online hydroponic and grow light shops trailblazing the market with higher quality equipment and lower prices than ever before, local hydroponics stores are opening up in just about every major city...
   
   
4. Marijuana use will continue to grow more accepted in mainstream society
   
   
5. With increased legalization and the spread of information about indoor growing, medical marijuana will continue to become more available to the many people who would benefit from it
