Old saying

Spider Mites Be Gone!
by Nebula Haze

Every marijuana grower hates spider mites!

The 3 things I hate most about spider mites are:

  1. They Multiply - spider mites often reproduce faster than you can believe, sometimes before you even know they're there
  2. Disappearing Act - spider mites often seem to disappear, then come back with a vengeance
  3. Zombie-like Resistance - the spider mites in your grow room will quickly become immune to anything you try to attack them with, especially if you have low levels of spider mites in your grow area for a long time
Spider mites look like little specks, and live under the leaves of your plants. They will start spinning little webs on your plants and buds if you don't get rid of them right away.

If you don't notice them right away, a bad spider mite infestation can kill a whole plant. Their webbing can ruin a crop of buds.

They can lay millions of eggs in a day, and it takes a few days up to almost 2 weeks for new spider mites to mature into adults, depending on the kind of spider mites you have.

Immediate action is key!

I recommend killing every spider mite you can find immediately, then repeat a few days later with the same method PLUS another proven method.

Repeat until ALL spider mites are gone. You should attack at least once after you think they're gone, just to be sure.

After that, you need to look at prevention. Something you did allowed spider mites to get in your grow room, and you can't let that happen again!

Some methods for killing spider mites include:

  • Azamax
  • Mighty Wash
  • Alcohol and water
  • SM-90
  • Neem Oil
  • Homemade Pepper Spray - 9 parts water, 1 part dish soap, plus 1 tablespoon of cayenne pepper
  • Nicotine tea
  • NoPest Strips

Each method works great for some spider mites, and might not even work at all for spider mites. Some of them involve chemicals and need special care in your grow room, or after buds have started forming. Some methods won't be suitable for you and your setup.

No matter what works at first, if you don't get rid of ALL the spider mites in your grow room quickly, they will quickly become immune to your method and you will soon need to switch to other methods to kill the super bugs you've created.

This is why it's important to ACT QUICKLY when you first notice spider mites, and go overboard to get rid of them all.

5 Basic Steps to Getting Rid of Spider Mites For Good!

Basic Prevention

Indoor Spider Mite Prevention:

  • CLEAN grow room, no leaves, no waste. Clean.
  • Quarantine new plants or clones in a separate area, some growers even dip new clones from outside sources
  • Never go from outdoors straight to grow area
  • No animals in the grow room (pets, certain people)
  • Filter air from outside (if applicable)
  • Diatomaceous Earth sprinkled on the soil or growing medium, you may even want to sprinkle it all over your grow room, as it's safe for humans and plants, but will kill spider mites that crawl over it
  • Keep a cool, breezy grow room with good ventilation (spider mites thrive in hot dry areas with little air exchange)
  • Hydro setups seem to be more resistant to spider mites than soil grows
Outdoor Spider Mite Prevention:

If you have a spider mite problem outdoors, you will want to...
  • Quarantine new plants or clones, or dip new clones in something that kills spider mites - most importantly, don't bring marijuana-specialized spider mites to your grow area!
  • Make sure there is a healthy population of predatory insects to kill off the spider mites (like lady bugs , though the "Western Predatory Mite" is your best defense against spider mites)
  • Make sure you have proper ground cover (cover your soil with a soil cover, weed barrier fabric, Diatomaceous Earth, or some other barrier). Basically, you want to prevent anything from being able to live or grow in the soil near your plants
  • If things get bad, invest in a strong pesticide that is specifically formulated for spider mites, take a look at this list for ideas, Floramite is considered a very strong and effective pesticide

What's your time-tested method for killing spider mites? Any horror stories?
