actionable marketing guide

Dear ,

Greetings!

If you found my content and social media presence lighter than usual last week, there’s a reason for that.

I was unplugged and off-the-grid!!!

My husband and I took a much-needed vacation to the Bitter End Yacht Club (aka BEYC) located on Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands (or BVIs). It’s a favorite spot for sailing sports enthusiasts including wind surfers like my husband.

BUT it’s definitely not the place for people who need to constantly be attached.

Despite the proximity to islands owned by Richard Branson of Virgin and Larry Page of Google (yes, you read that correctly), the resort has 2 public wifi stations due to local telecom providers forcing high costs because of scarce resources.

Translation: You’re competing with every child that has a tablet for bandwidth.

While I had planned to be offline for my break, unforeseen circumstances hindered my ability to complete my work before I left.

Instead of not publishing anything for a week, I rescheduled the articles that were complete before I left. While not optimal, it still kept my presence alive. If you check, giving my readers more space between articles meant that more people read each one.

What does this mean for your marketing?
  • Plan for the unexpected. What will you do when life prevents you from achieving your goals? How will you get back on track?

  • Be able to work offline for periods of time. Don’t assume that you’ll always have connectivity. As a New Yorker who can get free WiFi just about anywhere in Manhattan, including a number of MTA subway stations, this can be surprising.
This week, we interviewed Andrea Vahl about her best-selling "Dummies" book, Facebook Marketing All-in-One.

We'll give away a copy of Facebook Marketing All-in-One to one lucky winner with a US postal address.*

The winner of last week's book giveaway, a print edition of Dave Kerpen's, Likeable Social Media is Carol Lynn. Congratulations Carol!
* Please understand that while we appreciate that our readers are located around the world, we will only send physical books to people with a US address due to customs issues. We encourage you to sign up to get related goodies even if you don’t have a US postal address for delivery.
Happy marketing,
Heidi

Heidi Cohen Interviews Andrea Vahl

What’s your best piece of advice for readers looking to improve their marketing?

If your business is online, focus most of your online activities on growing your e-mail list. I think a lot of marketers think of growing their social media presence and that’s a good way to connect with new people but then you have to deepen your connection with them via your e-mail list.

Also really study copywriting. Being able to express yourself well and understand what will move potential buyers into action will help you in every aspect of your business.
