actionable marketing guide

Dear ,

Recently, my husband and I took advantage of the summer for a last minute road trip to the Berkshires, a beautiful area of western Massachusetts.

The Berkshires are the summer getway destination for those who dislike beaches. They’re soaked in history and the arts including summer stock, classical music (Tanglewood) and dance (Jacob’s Pillow).

Translation: Booked solid from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

I knew that we were facing tough odds when I searched for B&Bs in the Berkshires on Tuesday for a room on Wednesday and Thursday.  I turned to TripAdvisor, my go-to-resource for hotel research.

You can imagine my surprise when #3 rated Crabtree Cottage in Lee had a reasonably priced room available. To sweeten the deal, the small B&B didn’t charge hotel tax since it only had 3 rooms!
The B&B was nicely decorated without the usual overabundance of period knick-knacks. Janis, the owner, was available and helpful without being intrusive. The breakfasts were delicious.

The added bonus: One of the best restaurants we've eaten at in the area, Chez Nous, was 3 blocks away so we didn't need to worry about driving home.

When we checked out, I asked Janis about her TripAdvisor ratings. She said that the guests who tended to post were younger millennials. They did it without her knowing about it. Since then, Janis admitted that she’s gotten more involved in social media.

But don't expect to see Janis as a mover and shaker in the hospitality vertical of social media. She’s focused on keeping a steady stream of satisfied guests. Janis's social media results are low compared to the social media superstars.

The lesson: Your customers are your brand.

While there are another 3 weeks of summer, I want to remind you that I'll be at Content Marketing World in Cleveland next month. I'm curating the Social Media track on Wednesday, September 9th. Please join me and my all-star cast. Or, just stop by between sessions and say hello.

Happy marketing,
Heidi

Content marketers take note: As host of Comedy Central’s The Daily ShowJon Stewart proved he was a content curation master.
