Lately I’ve been thinking about content creation processes as I prepare my Social Media Marketing World Workshop.

Research by Kapost shows that most content marketing efforts are once and done.  

No one really talks about that since we’re under too much pressure to keep creating more and more of this one-off work. 

That’s the opposite of the Mad Men era when agencies focused on creating the best possible ad and then kept promoting it. While the ads were more expensive to create, the cost was distributed over more presentations.

Your audience still needs to see your marketing message roughly the same number of times as they did back in the Mad Men era, namely 5 to 8 times.

While most content marketing efforts are generally less expensive in terms of creative costs than a traditional television ad, if they’re only promoted once and forgotten, their expense can add up.

If you’ve got a small business, this cost is even bigger. Your content creation is often done at the expense of doing other things to grow your business.

What can you do to get a greater return from your content investment?
  • Extend your promotion of each piece of content. Plan your repromotion in advance to streamline your process.

  • Curate your content. Actively guide your audience to related articles that will help them better understand your current content. This means internal links, recommended reading inside your articles, and suggested related articles at the end of your content.
  • Update your existing content. This is particularly important for high performing articles and content that has information that’s dated. It also means that you signal Google.

Take the time to assess where your content marketing efforts are best used and how to extend the power of the content you already have.
