actionable marketing guide

Dear ,

Spring is in the air. During the vernal equinox days and nights are balanced.

Spring signals getting out and being social. It’s time to shake off our winter hibernation and nesting.

New York chocolate connoisseur Jacques Torres, opened a stand in Grand Central near the Graybar building. It’s chocolate bunnies in orange and brown boxes whisper, “Buy me” to the commuters passing by.

Don’t worry about your waistline. At Torres’s nosebleed prices, you’re not buying more than a small treat.

Despite his sweet tooth, my grandfather would have kept walking to the other end of Grand Central to the significantly less expensive Rite Aid Pharmacy. Once there, he’d stock up on the “cheap chocolate” he liked.

A good friend of mine is a salesperson in the baking industry. She confided she could tell the seasonal change based on her business. She had opened 3 new accounts in the last 3 weeks.

What can you learn as a marketer from this seasonal change?
  • Take the time and think about what these spring changes mean for your customers and your business.
  • Determine which holidays and events matter to your business. For example, The Daily Show did a spin on college basketball’s March Madness called Third Month Mania.

  • Assess what opportunities the calendar presents to create content and engage with prospects, customers and social media followers.
For me, there’s less than one month until Social Media Marketing World 2016. I have to admit that I can’t wait. I’ve been working on new material for my Sunday, April 17th workshop, “How To Create Quality Blog Posts Quickly and Effectively”.

One Twitter follower tweeted that he didn’t understand how I could teach blogging quality.

That made me stop and think.

Fortunately, my friends at Content Marketing Institute and MarketingProfs do annual research on content marketing including blogs. Check out the full 2016 B2B results.
  • 44% of B2B marketers know what content success looks like.
  • 32% of B2B marketers have a documented content marketing strategy.
  • 28% of B2B marketers have a documented editorial content mission statement for their primary audience.

Yet less than a third of B2B marketers view their content marketing efforts as successful!!!

Considering that content marketing budgets continue to stay constant or grow, these results have room for improvement.

Learning what success looks like and planning for it will help you leapfrog the competition to the top third of your niche.

Since the same applies to blogging, please join me for an amazing workshop. The blogging focus can be applied more broadly to your content and social media efforts. Please sign up here.
This week,  Dave Kerpen joined me to discuss his latest book, The Art of People. Dave has distilled the art of social business to 11 simple people skills that will get you everything you want.

One lucky subscriber will be randomly picked to receive a free copy of The Art of People. Deadline for new entries is March 26. See the Book Giveaway page for details.

And check out Dave's revised and expanded edition of Likeable Social Media, a New York Times and USA Today bestseller!
Last week I interviewed Martin Lindstrom, a global branding expert, about his latest book, Small Data: The Tiny Clues That Uncover Huge Trends.

With the title, Small Data, I expected another marketing book about how to deal with marketing information. Instead, I found a wonderful personal story about how Martin observes and interacts with people around the world.

Small Data is a personal journey mixed with sociology. This book gets you to think differently about your customers, their lives and how they approach your product.

We randomly picked a subscriber to receive a free copy of Small Data — It's Ed. Congratulations Ed!
Happy marketing,
Heidi

Your Content Doesn’t Get Enough Attention (Neither Does Mine)

Like Donald Trump, your carefully crafted content lusts for attention. Without reader attention, your content can’t support your business. It has no audience.

Unlike The Donald,  the master of newsjacking according to David Meerman Scott, your content often gets lost in your audience’s social media streams and inboxes. Continue reading
