actionable marketing guide

Dear ,

I’m in sunny San Diego at Social Media Marketing World 2016!

Yesterday, I presented my “How to Create Quality Blog Posts Quickly and Consistently” workshop to a packed room of 300+. (Of course, I’m writing this before I even set foot out of my apartment for the airport.)

I practiced and practiced the presentation until I thought I’d wear the digital ink off my computer screen.

And (you guessed it) I practiced some more. I could say the presentation in my sleep. In fact, I think I did.

For me, practice run-throughs are tough. I get my energy from the audience.

May be it’s that I learned to present and teach IRL in front of my NYU students. They were both accepting and tough critics, often at the same time.

I remember leaving the first class I taught. It was opposite Bryant Park where the main branch of the New York Public Library is located. I walked across West 42nd Street to the catch Uptown 1 train home.

All I remember was my horror. Despite reviewing the slides before my first class, there were arithmetic mistakes when I presented it. I was convinced I could never walk into a classroom ever again.

When I called my best friend for consolation, he said, “You do realize that you’ll have teach again next week.”

“But I can’t,” I screamed. I didn’t need a phone to get my message across the Hudson River.

He calmly responded, “They’re expecting you.”

He was right. (Unfortunately, he usually is.)

The next day, I woke up to find that the world was where I had left it.

I made myself a cup of coffee and settled down at my computer to create the second class.

By the third class, l learned to take the errors in my presentations in stride. When they popped up, I raised the projection screen and corrected the answer on the white board. In the process the students learned how to get the right answer. I won them over and they were on my side.

Since then I’ve learned that audiences want you to succeed. They want to learn from you. So they’re often much more forgiving about your presentation than you are.

If you’re attending SMMW16, please don’t be a stranger. Come up to me and introduce yourself. I’m hosting a roundtable on Tuesday at lunchtime on Content Ideation.

As for the small mistakes and problems in your life, take a deep breath. Everything will work out.

Very few things are life and death, especially for a marketer.
If life gets too tense, give yourself leeway to fail. Then pick yourself up, take a break, and move on.

Remember there’s always ice cream and chocolate.

This week, I interviewed Patrick McGinnis whose new book, The 10% Entrepreneur, teaches you how to "Live Your Startup Dream Without Quitting Your Day Job."

The Actionable Marketing Guide will randomly pick one subscriber to receive a copy of The 10% Entrepreneur. We'll announce the winner in next week's newsletter.

Last week, I interviewed Chris Guillebeau about his new book, Born for This: How to Find the Work You Were Meant to Do. Chris is a writer, traveler, and entrepreneur who's worked all his life but never had a "real" job. He spent 10 years of that life on a quest to visit every country in the world.

Our randomly picked subscriber who'll receive a copy of Born for This is, Laura Matar. Congratulations Laura!

And check out Chris' previous books: The $100 Startup, The Art of Non-Conformity and The Happiness of Pursuit.

Happy marketing,
Heidi

The 10% Entrepreneur – Book Interview

Heidi Cohen Interviews Patrick J. McGinnis

New book: The 10% Entrepreneur: Live Your Startup Dream Without Quitting Your Day Job

Q: What’s your best piece of advice for readers looking to improve their marketing?

Marketing starts with you. Make your name the most important one of your business card so that no matter where you go in your career, you will always be investing in the only “brand” that you can actually carry with you – your own.

Choose the one or two things you most want to be known for professionally (and sometimes that intersects with personal interests as well). Then create content, whether it’s a blog, blog posts for others, or articles for publications, that support all of your efforts. Also try to speak at conferences or maybe even on TV.

State of the Industry 2016

A closer look at retargeting, programmatic advertising, and performance marketing.

Due to its prevalence, it's easy to lose track of how new the programmatic advertising industry is. And as with any new industry driven by a disruptive technology, things are changing quickly.

AdRoll surveyed 1,050 US marketers across industries to uncover how businesses are adopting new marketing opportunities brought about by programmatic advertising.

Report Highlights:

  • Marketers invest heavily in programmatic across all channels. 32% of marketers spend over 50% of online advertising budgets on programmatic.
  • Marketers think mobile first, despite persistent challenges. The percent of marketers retargeting on mobile jumped from 54% to 82% in 2015.
  • Attribution continues to be a hot topic. The number of marketers who have adopted an attribution model that tracks multiple customer touch points, rather than a single-click model, has nearly doubled from 24% in 2014 to 40% in 2015.
