I’m still basking in the Social Media Marketing World 2016 afterglow.

After all the anticipation and behind scenes work preparing for the 3 day event, the actual minutes just flew by. You experience it like a child where short periods of time are major chunks of your life. 

SMMW is more than a conference. It’s a group love fest, for speakers and attendees alike. People who’ve only known each other from behind a social media profile step out and are real. 

For a social media focused event, I was surprised at the personal messages that resonated throughout the show. They’re the pep talk you need to go out and do great things.

Stand Out – author, Dorie Clark expressed it best: “How can we break through in a world of distraction?”  (BTW, check out our interview with Clark.) 

To build your personal brand, you must find your breakthrough idea and become known for your expertise. Clark outlined 3 key steps:

  • Build your network. Develop your connections over time. Go for breadth before depth.  Create small trusted groups around you. Be deliberate about the people you want to spend time with. 

  • Build your audience. To this end, content creation is powerful. Assess how you can scale and disseminate your ideas.

  • Build your community. Share your ideas one-to-many with your community. Inspire and tweak your ideas. Your ideas are valuable when other people want to share them. Give your community a way to come together. 

Gary Vanderchuk (aka, Gary Vee) said it best, “Anything that steals your time and doesn’t give you anything back is bad.”  

Gary Vee spends all of his time trying to figure out how to get opportunities for attention. I just watch people and obsess about my audience.  “I’ve done almost nothing by accident.” To become more self aware, listen more.
