It’s June and love is in the humid New York air.

June is prime wedding season. 15% of weddings take place in June. (I should know. We contributed to that statistic!)

New York’s many landmarks and attractions make great backdrops for marriage proposals and weddings. Your choices include rivers, skyscrapers and parks.

Both an Affair to Remember and Sleepless In Seattle contain a romantic rendez-vous at the top of the Empire State Building.

Last Saturday, a friend and I took advantage of the sunny weather to knit in Central Park and listen to the Guitar Man, Dave Ippolito

Ippolito was celebrating beginning his 25th year of playing in the park. He sings on a knoll near the water off of West Drive between the Ramble and Strawberry Fields. To the south you get a view of the New York skyline including the General Motors Building and Citigroup Center.

From a marketing perspective, Ippolito exemplifies how you can build a following by showing up on a regular schedule. He’s carved out a fan base of New Yorkers and beyond. He makes money from donations and CD purchases.

While Ippolito played a gondola came up behind him. (While I knew about the park’s horse drawn carriages, I never knew about its gondolas.) Ippolito kidded with the gondola man who let his passengers listen to a song.

Unexpectedly, one of the passengers stood up. Then knelt on one knee to propose to his girlfriend. A ring magically appeared in his hand.

Surprised, she said yes.

Everyone in the audience took photos and cheered.

Why?

We all love a “married and lived happily ever after” fairy tale.

BTW, as a marketer, you can learn a lot from weddings.

As a marketer, ask:

  • What can you do to make one person’s day special?
  • What can you do to make your audience feel special?
  • What can you do to make your customers feel special?

Stay tuned. This week we’ve got an interview with University of Pennsylvania Professor Jonah Berger. His new book, Invisible Influence, hits bookstores this week.

If you haven’t read his first book, Contagious, it’s well worth your time. It focuses on what makes things go viral.

Take some time to get out from behind your computer. Experience the world around you without being connected to a device.

Happy marketing,

Heidi Cohen
