Actionable Marketing Guide Newsletter

actionable marketing guide

Dear ,

Nothing shakes your weekend like a IED exploding near your home.

My husband and I had settled in for a quiet evening of being couch potatoes. After 2 packed weeks of Content Marketing World, family and friends, we wanted to rest.

We heard a huge bang.

It felt like thunder.

Or fireworks.

Then silence.

No rain.

No dazzling lights.

We live in a neighborhood known for partying. Silence isn’t a good sign.

My husband cracked the window open and carefully peered out.

Nothing.

Less than 10 minutes later, fire trucks blared up Sixth Avenue.

And they kept coming for almost an hour.

Twitter had comments and photos within minutes. The local news took about a half hour to catch up. Mainly rebroadcasting social media streams.

We stayed put. We felt and still feel safe.

But more than that, we feel proud and grateful to be New Yorkers.

To live in a city where the response was fast and professional.

To know that very few people were hurt and most not seriously.

Be safe.

I’ll let that sink in and continue with our regularly scheduled newsletter.

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been out at Content Marketing World, in Chicago and in New York.

I’ve been connecting with people IRL.

I’ve been making and deepening relationships.

Why?

Because no matter how connected you are on social media and email, you need to get out from behind your computer or smartphone screen.

You have to be a real person.

You must engage person-to-person. This is what life is composed of.

It takes effort. It takes energy.

This is particularly true if you’re naturally shy.

I know. I was the shy kid through high school.

Let me tell you—no one’s waiting for you despite how much you hope.

You have to put yourself out there. You have to step up and try.You have to believe in yourself.

I know from personal experience that it doesn’t always work. When it doesn’t you have to pick yourself up and try again.

At Content Marketing World 2016, I met amazing people. (BTW, if you attended Content Marketing World 2016 and I didn’t see you, please contribute to my post-event roundup article – it’s only 3 questions!)

I had the time to spend with people and learn more about them. We laid the foundation to work together in the future.

I meet readers like you. I got to see the faces of my audience. Wow—how cool is that?
I met wonderful people who shared dinner and taxi rides.

Last week, I met a former NYU student for a drink after an event at the Roosevelt Hotel. She was one of my first students. We caught up and talked about how we can help each other.

What does this mean for you and your business?

Use every opportunity to get out and meet people.  You won’t know what can happen until you try.

I don’t mean sell, sell, sell.

I mean engage and communicate. Find ways to build relationships.

Pay it forward.

Since I’ve been working hard, my husband and I are taking a well deserved 2 week vacation, something we haven’t done in ages.

We’re headed to Scotland, specifically, Edinburgh and the Shetland Islands. While it’s a vacation, we chose to attend Shetland Wool Week to indulge my passion for knitting. If you’re located in Edinburgh or attending Shetland Wool Week, please let me know. I’d love to meet you IRL!

That said, while the Actionable Marketing Guide will continue publishing articles, I’ll be mostly offline.  There will be no newsletter published next Monday, September 26  or the following, Monday, October 3rd.  We’ll be back on Tuesday, October 11 due to Columbus Day.

For those of you who plan ahead, I’ll be in Rhinebeck on Saturday, October 15 for New York State Sheep & Wool Festival and in Boston the following week for MarketingProfs B2B. Please join me.

Happy Marketing,
Heidi.

Q: What’s your best piece of advice for readers looking to improve their marketing?

Marketing is about delivering the right message to the right person, not the right persona group.
