As night’s curtain falls earlier and earlier at this time of year, the sun’s weak rays barely reach my dining room table (aka: office desk) by 4:30pm.

I feel the undercurrent of excitement as we approach the first day of winter in New York City.

It comes from the people walking faster than usual amidst the increased holiday traffic. (In New York, it starts Thanksgiving week and continues through New Year’s Day.)

They’ve got a sense of determination.

​​​​​​​Maybe it’s the shopping they’ve got to do.

Maybe it’s the parties they’re off to attend.

Maybe it’s just the wintery burst of cold.

Beyond the holidays, this time of year is a good time to get organized. Then unplug and recharge your batteries for 2017.

One of my friends said it best: “I’m going to hibernate Christmas week..”

Regardless of the holidays you do or don’t celebrate, take some time for yourself. Use this time to think about your life, both professional and personal.

Before you follow John Oliver’s lead and call 2016 a very S----Y year, ask yourself what you thought went right.

Make a list of what went right for you. (Yes a lot of terrible things happened in 2016 but focusing on them won’t change your life.)

Even better follow Derek Halpern’s advice. Look at your list and figure out which of these good things you can repeat to make next year better.

Then think about what’s on your lifetime bucket list.

Ask yourself what do you really want to do that you’ve never had the time, money or guts to do?

Going back in time isn’t an option. Outside of science fiction books, movies and television shows, there aren’t any time machines in working order. (If you know of any, please drop me a line.)

Look at your bucket list. Ask yourself:

  • What is the one thing you really want to do?
  • What steps could you take to make it come true?

The object is to empower youself to take control of your life.

You can make positive changes to make 2017 a better year than 2016.

It won’t happen based on a bunch of New Year’s Resolutions.

How many times have you promised to go on a diet or visit the gym more often?

How long did that last?

A week?

Maybe.

In the spirit of the holidays, we’re not publishing this newsletter next week.

We’ll be hibernating and planning for 2017.
