It's not the vocal bands (cords) that need balancing. It's the musculature in the neck and shoulders and back - you want to feel that you are in a state of light equilibrium.
Then you can spend your time and vocal energy on finding the right
inner shape of the mouth and tongue to create interesting tone and color.
Maybe warming up becomes more necessary as we get older. I am certainly getting older. :) But in truth, I have always warmed up my voice before singing.
