Is Your Workplace Culture Stuck in the Past?

So many organizations have risen to the challenge the last few years by investing in their culture and reimagining a more inspiring culture to help them adapt to these rapidly changing times and changing expectations. Other organizations...well...not so much.

On this note, an article called Three Signs Your Culture is Stuck in 2019 in Forbes magazine caught my eye. The three signs, according to the author April Jones are (and I'd love to hear what your signs would be):

1. Thinking purpose is only reserved for workplaces like Patagonia. We know a sense of purpose matters in any workplace and with any job, and now, more than ever. According to research from Razorfish/VICE Media Group, employees' intention to remain with a company with a well-defined sense of purpose triple.

2. Thinking employees should always be at the office full time. According to a Grant Thornton study, 80% of employees would like to have the freedom to choose where and when to get their work done. Offering employees flexibility and demonstrating that you trust them is one of the biggest keys to attracting and retaining employees!

3. Employees should be willing to be "on" 24/7 and sacrifice their personal lives for their work. According to a study reported in LinkedIn research, when employees feel truly cared for, they are 3 times more likely to be happy at work and 3.7 times more likely to recommend their company to others. And employees definitely do not feel cared for if they are being treated like disposable cogs that must sacrifice any semblance of a life. We know from mountains of research that when leaders treat their employees with respect and humanity, they are far more likely to stay, more innovative, healthier, resilient, and more productive.

So, perhaps it's worth asking your team this question: "Are we stuck in a time vortex or are we building a future-focused, inspiring, humane workplace culture that works for everyone?"

Hold a "standing quiz" with your team (and yes, you can also do this for virtual meetings): Everyone begins standing up, then have your "trivia master/game show host" ask a series of true or false trivia questions related to your company, profession, or teammates. When people get the answer wrong they have to take their seat, so the last person standing is the winner of your much-coveted trivia master prize (I'm imagining a cute golden retriever puppy but you might want to go with something more practical?)

"I'm writing a book about all the things I should be doing in my life. It's called an oughtobiography!"

As seen on a business sign at a business undergoing renovations:

WE ARE OPEN.
Unless we are closed.
We are only closed,
when we are not open.
