    Rewarding Chill Over Busyness

The goodr sunglasses company takes a chill approach when it comes to managing employee burnout. In fact, they've created an initiative that I absolutely love: "Chill is the new busy."

They believe language matters, and how you frame being busy matters. They actively discourage people from working more than 40 hours in a week and they reward chill, not busy! They let their employees know that they expect them to have a life outside of work and to not sacrifice their personal lives and health for the sake of their work.

To help prevent burnout they employ an "Overwhelm Status" system of red, yellow, or green at their weekly meeting updates, where people can identify where they are in both their personal and work lives. A green means all is good, a yellow means you might need support this week or a plan to get on track, and red means you're in the overwhelm zone.

When employees are over-extended, or as they call it, in the zone of Red Reckoning, they've identified three primary causes: 20% of the time it's due to communication issues (people not speaking up about deadlines or simply not saying, "no"); 20% of the time it's due to a lack of efficiency; a whopping 60% of the time they guesstimate it's due to something they call "hustling for self-worth." Hustling for self worth is about over-extending yourself because it feeds your ego or because you feel the need to justify your position and value.

This is a great and critical conversation you need to have with your team!

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

September 9 is Hug Your Boss Day. Now, depending on what Covid protocols you have in place, literally hugging your boss may not be an option. However, it doesn't mean you can't metaphorically hug your boss with an "air hug" or send them a huggable card or gift. Remember, bosses often get very little support or love sent their way and if you want your boss to do a better job appreciating and recognizing you and your team, then sending a little love their way sends a powerful message.
