Don't Go Into Work Unless It's Fun Day!

It's time for a spring-infused, gluten-free, 100% organic edition of random ideas and musings:
  • Organizational guru Tom Peters shared how at his retirement gala, hotelier Conrad Hilton was asked what single piece of advice he would give if asked. His answer: "Don’t forget to tuck the shower curtain inside the bathtub.” What shorthand phrase could you use in your organization to get across the idea of the importance of taking care of the small details to drive your success?
  • A study from Achievers Workforce Institute found that there are five pillars of success for employees in any organization: Employees must feel welcomed, known, included, supported, and connected. Which of these does your organization most need to work on?
  • A study by Professor Will Felps from the University of New South Wales found that even with exceptionally talented teams, just one under-performing teammate brought down the entire team by 30-40% compared to other teams. Moreover the behavior of teams quickly took on the characteristics of the weakest individual.(Hey, this seems like an ideal spot to mention my book, The Jerk-Free Workplace, doesn't it? I mean seriously, of course it is!)
  • At Netflix, it is considered disloyal to NOT speak up to senior manager if you have an idea or a challenging question. They look at it this way (and I love this): "You mean you had an idea that could have helped our business, and you chose not to?"
  • Today is Don't Go Into Work Unless It's Fun Day and since it's so close to a Thursday, why not try out "Third Person Thursdays" tomorrow, where everyone refers to themselves using their own name. (Please let me know if you do this, it would make Michael SO happy!)

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

As I mentioned, today, April 3, is "Don't Go Into Work Unless It's Fun Day." The day is meant to remind us all to look for simple ways to add more fun into the workplace.

One idea to ponder with your team on this note is to pose the opposite questions, "What is getting in the way of people having any fun at work?" or  "What isn't any fun at work these days?" Asking these questions can help you identify jobstacles (work-related obstacles) that might be demotivating everyone.
