A Positive Approach to Adversity
There are a couple of ways to deal with the world outside of us. The first is the one we see most often nowadays - we call it the opposition approach. This is where we separate ourselves into us and them, or we say this is better than that, or we harbor the ideas of good and bad, right and wrong, especially wrong. If you watch a little commercial TV you will soon spot example after example of this "wrongness" being presented to you.
Indeed, our outer world is filled with suggestions about what is wrong in our lives, and if we buy into these kinds of thoughts and beliefs we have to deal with the manifestation of them - and this includes all the anger, emotional meltdowns, sickness, poverty, unhappiness and negative experiences that go along with them. This is the world being created for those who buy into the conformist reality and do not take responsibility for creating their own world.
Fortunately, another way of dealing with our ever-changing external world is available to us. We can see the positive side of it all. It can all be okay with us . . .
If you are feeling fear and recognize it,
you have the choice of using
the other half of your thought
which is your positive thought.
Your positive thoughts are always available
to you in all situations
I was visiting with my neighbor friend, Hasyo, last week and we were talking about all the "stuff" people are going through in these times - and how to handle it. You see, Hasyo are both long-time meditators, and I was asking him how we can lessen the distractions of the monkey-mind so we can go deeper in our meditations. My thinking was that the clearer our inner world gets, the more peace we'll have in our outer lives.
As it turned out, Hasyo had asked this very same question to his Master of Masters, Osho, with whom he had visited many times both in India and the US. As he replied, Hasyo leaned forward, his eyes twinkling like they do whenever he recalls his beloved Master. "Osho answered my question with two sentences, Tony," he said. "The first was 'Everything is going perfectly fine.' And the second sentence was 'Relax and Enjoy.'"
And that's the lesson that Hasyo and Osho shared with me last week, and I share it with you now. No matter what is going on around us we always have the option of remaining neutral and telling ourselves that everything is going along perfectly fine - and that the best thing we can do is relax and enjoy it.
