The Story of the Philanthropy of Three Companions of Prophet Muhamad s.a.w.
certainly hear a lot about the companions of the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. Besides the blessing of their faith, Allah s.w.t. also acknowledge their great struggle and sacrifice to help Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. fight in the way of Allah s.w.t.
The story of Uthman bin Affan and Abdurahman bin Auf is written in surah al-Baqarah verse 261 and specifically Abu Bakar Ash-Shiddiq in surah Al-Lail verses 17-21.
Allah s.w.t. said:
"The parable of a person who spends his wealth in the way of God is like a seed that grows seven stalks, on each stalk there are a hundred seeds.
Allah multiplies for whom He wills, and Allah is All-Wide, All-Knowing.” (QS Al-Baqarah: 261)
Quraish Shihab in Tafsir Al-Mishbah mentioned that if we
trace the history of the revelation of surah al-Baqarah verse 261, then we will find the fact that this verse was revealed in connection with the generosity of Uthman bin Affan and Abdurrahman bin Auf. The two companions of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. that came with their wealth to finance the Tabuk war.
It is said that when the Tabuk war happened, Muslims lacked logistics and weapons. Prophet s.a.w. then encouraged the friends to invest.
The suggestion was answered by Utsman bin Affan by financing a third of the needs of the Tabuk war.
He gave all his wealth which consisted of 900 camels, 100 horses and thousands of dirhams. This was then followed by Abdurrahman bin Auf who gave hundreds of gold pieces.
At that time, Uthman prepared a thousand camels and their saddles and placed a thousand dinars in front of Prophet Muhammad
Abu Bakar Ash-Siddiq in the same event that is before the battle of Tabuk, Rasulullah s.a.w. calling on Muslims to help Abu Bakar Ash-Shiddiq in the form of property and energy and then collect the property he owns.
In the Kitab Fadhilah Amal written by Maulana Zakariyya Al Khandahlawi, scholars agree that the revelation of Surat Al-Lail verses 17-21 is about Abu Bakar Siddiq. Allah
"And later the most pious people will be kept away from hell. Who spends his wealth (in the way of God) to purify it.
Even though no one gave him a favor that he had to reciprocate. But (he gave it only) because he sought the pleasure of his Lord the Most High. And later he will really get satisfaction." (QS Al-Lail: 17-21).
May these stories be a guide for us to be like the companions of the Prophet s.a.w. and earn the blessing of Allah s.w.t.
