Happy new year! Hope you had a fun and relaxing holiday season.
As I write this, I’m packing to return to Los Angeles from my hometown of Chicago. It’s literally 1 degree Fahrenheit right now in Chicago! As you can imagine, moments like these really make me appreciate that I live in Los Angeles.
For many, the arrival of a new year inspires the desire for a fresh start.
That’s why you see so many people join gyms at the beginning of each year.
The start of a new year is also a big time for people to evaluate their careers.
Before the inspiration of the new year wears off, those who are hoping for something more or different for their careers will either seize the opportunity to do something about it or they’ll accept the status quo.
There’s nothing wrong with proactively choosing the status quo after you’ve thoroughly compared it to your alternatives.
But when you choose the status quo by default, you are blocking your access to possibilities and opportunities.
Sadly, I see lawyers do this often.
The reason?
Fear of change.
Since 2003, when I first became a legal recruiter, and throughout the years that I’ve been career coaching, I’ve seen fear of change get in the way of far too many lawyers’ careers.
I wrote the article for anyone who has ignored outreach from recruiters, shied away from engaging with a career coach, or even gone through one of my coaching programs without thoroughly following through.
Make the most of the new year! Be open to possibilities and opportunities. Make them happen.
Happy new year,
Marc
