As you think about whether you're ready for help to start moving forward and figuring out whether a better career fit might be waiting for you, let me share what some past clients have had to say about my JD Refugee® program.
Before I do that, a quick reminder that the doors to the JD Refugee® Essentials group program close on Sunday night.
You have until Sunday, October 17 at 11:59 pm Pacific Time to take advantage of the 4 months of online class access (that's twice as much as you’ll need) and group calls for live support from me and your peers.
Plus, I'm throwing in a Myers-Briggs MBTI® personality assessment and private phone session with me. We'll look at your personality preferences and use them to inform your choice of career paths.
I'm also giving you access to the full JDCOT career video library, so you can see examples of lawyers working in a wide variety of careers and hear directly from them what their paths are really like.
Your confidentiality will be respected in all aspects of my program - including the group calls.
Like I said in the last email, the JD Refugee® Essentials group program is focused on self-discovery to help you get clarity on what paths might fit you besides practicing law – and whether leaving law even makes sense for you.
You’ll also get help communicating about yourself so that people can see your value and you can make your law degree work for you (rather than against you).
Check out below how much of a difference getting help with these things has made for people who have gone through this part of the JD Refugee® program.
Here's what people are saying about the JD Refugee® program:
“I recommend Marc’s program for any attorney who feels stuck, hopeless, or overwhelmed by the prospect of making a change. If you put in the work, you’ll learn so much about yourself and identify possibilities for your life that you didn’t know existed.
I’ve gained a better sense of who I am and what I value (both personally and professionally) from working with Marc, which I know will serve me well wherever my career may go. After 8 years of law firm life, I’m excited to be embarking on a new adventure.”

“I would absolutely recommend doing this program with Marc. It has really given me the tools to start moving towards a career outside the legal field.
I was skeptical of this program at first because I didn’t know what to expect and because I didn’t know Marc. However, having gone through it, it is extremely apparent that Marc has put together a well-thought-out program that really helps guide you through the process of finding out what alternative careers might be a good fit for you.
The exercises and videos that are a part of his program logically help you self-reflect on your interests and strengths, which Marc understands are vital in finding a fulfilling career path.
If you are looking for job placement, this program will not do that. What it will do and has done for me, is teach you to identify the right tools for you to develop your exit plan.”

“I would definitely recommend this class to anyone even considering getting out of law and also to those who are dissatisfied with their current legal job but who may want to stay in the law. This is the class I should have taken even before law school so I could have gone into my professional life with more mindfulness of what path makes the most sense to me.
By taking the program, I was able to take all the scattered thoughts and fears I have had about changing careers and start to make sense of - and move past - them. I began to understand why I was dissatisfied with my current job (and several before that) and why I might not like being a lawyer. I started seeing how things I've learned in my current and previous jobs could translate perfectly into new, exciting non-legal careers. I also began to
understand how and why I could be more attractive to new employers. Once I started discovering all of this, my search felt more positive and exciting than fearful.
One of the things I liked most about this class was that it forced me to answer questions and be thoughtful about my career search. Before, I would just ask myself periodically: what else would I like to do with my life? With this program, I actually did the serious work to look in the mirror and examine what would make the best fit for me. I found the group calls to be incredibly valuable for getting feedback, hearing about other people's experiences, and ensuring that I completed the
homework and kept myself moving forward.
I had been thinking for way too long about moving on from my job but life kept getting in the way. Work would be too busy, my wife and I bought a house, had a first kid, and then another. My spare time seemed always filled by other obligations that I just didn't have time to spend on thinking proactively about what I wanted to do with my life. Plus, whenever I thought about what I might like to do other than be a lawyer, I would think about how I wasn't qualified to do it and my
`brainstorming' would stop almost as quickly as it started. So, I just kept persevering at my job for years - not at all satisfied - but getting by and just enduring so I could be happy in my personal life.
On a complete impulse, I decided to no longer put things off anymore. I didn't want to just quit my job and force myself to move on - having a wife and children doesn't allow that level of spontaneity. So I signed up for this course and threw myself completely into the process.
I am so glad that I did. If you are contemplating a job or career change and are stuck in neutral on that road, take this course!"

“Before reaching out to Marc, I was unhappy and felt stuck in my career path. I’d gone to law school, worked at a small firm, transitioned to a midsize firm and was thinking about moving to a larger, more prestigious firm just because that’s what I thought lawyers were supposed to do. I realized I was headed for the “golden handcuffs” trap, so I reached out to Marc for help. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I’m so glad I took the risk and joined his
program.
Because of Marc’s program, I’m more in tune with what I want and I have the skills and confidence to get there. If any lawyer feels lost or needs motivation to get out of law, I highly recommend taking Marc’s program.”

“This class helped me identify my strengths and skills to formulate a career path that leverages my innate talents and it gave me the critical tools to help accomplish my new career objectives.”

"I would definitely recommend Marc’s program. As lawyers, we all might be great at getting into school, getting jobs and becoming fairly successful, but we may not know how to identify professions that could make us happier than practicing law. This is especially the case when those professions go up against any notions of what you’re “supposed to be doing” after graduating from law school. For anyone who is just going down the path because it’s the path you’re on, then it really does force
you to think outside of that box. Remember that it is a process – and that takes time. So you need to be ready to dedicate some time.
After 11 years in litigation, I’d grown tired of the constant conflict. I’ve known litigation isn’t what I wanted to be doing long term, but felt like I didn’t have an option. I wanted to be more focused on preventing problems and being more proactive than reactive. The biggest issue for me was doing something you know you’re unhappy with but feeling like you don’t know where to start in getting out of it. Plus, being good at the actual work makes it even harder! Everyone around you wants
you to keep doing it and you feel afraid you’ll fail if you try to do something else.
The first part of Marc’s JD Refugee® program is professional development coursework that really focuses on introspection and figuring out what it is that you want to do. You look at your personality, strengths, what you enjoy and don’t like doing so you can understand yourself better. That all gets combined with other things about you from your guided self-exploration to help you find a more fulfilling profession.
I realized pretty quickly that Marc’s process was giving me something value-added, because it was forcing me to do something I wasn’t going to accomplish on my own. I know how to get a job, but I didn’t know how to do this type of exploration. His program required homework that led me to find patterns in my life and my choices that I hadn’t picked up on before. It wasn’t always fun, since I wouldn’t normally choose to pick apart my strengths and
weaknesses and analyze my personality traits, but it was definitely useful.
Then the program becomes more research-oriented, looking at how to find the kind of work that suits you once you’ve determined what suits you.
That’s the course itself.
Then there are the calls with Marc. Marc serves as a sounding board for eliciting ideas and different paths to explore.
Each time I talked to Marc, it felt like his agenda was to help me set my agenda. I didn’t feel judged in any way. He also provided accountability beyond what friends and family could provide. It wasn’t like he was cracking a whip, but having scheduled calls to talk about my progress, the next steps to take and whether or not I’ve taken those steps, created a sense of responsibility. Those calls get you to follow up on whatever your plan is because you know you’ll be talking to someone
about it.
Thanks to Marc’s program, I’ve built big changes into my job to provide me more fulfillment in the short term and I have an idea of where I’d like to further explore for the long term.”

"I'd recommend this program to anyone who's struggling with taking action. As a result of taking Marc's program, I was able to really articulate what I want. I was able to link together my attorney experience to the job I was looking for.
As an associate, I could see into the future of my colleagues 10 years ahead of me. I didn't like what their lives looked like, what my future would look like. I didn't want to just stay in the comfort zone, stay on the train tracks and turn into that. I actually wanted to enjoy life. And I wanted to do work that mattered and actually made a difference.
Signing up for Marc's program was a tangible action that I could take. I like that Marc's program is self-paced, self-guided, but with the biweekly phone call support. Early on in the program, we identify our strengths and then use the written exercises to really home in on how these strengths are going to be helpful to us at different types of jobs and be able to identify why these strengths are useful in other careers.
I think to get the most out of the course, you have to be willing to continue with taking bite-sized actions, as Marc's program's schedule recommends doing. There is definitely work that goes into it. It's not going to come automatically. You'll get out what you put into it.”
