My secret pleasure
|
Hey ,
I've been scared to send you this email. Worried that it will alienate you from me.
But then I thought... who cares.
Music is about breaking boundaries, expectations etc...
Going your own way.
And just because you know me as an acoustic player doesn't mean I can't share metal music with you.
I like all genres of music. If it has feeling, I'll listen to it!
I want to share 5 songs from palatable gateway metal into the more extreme fringes.
Go in with an open mind and who knows... you might discover a new artist to inspire you.
The poster boys of metal. This classic has one of the best acoustic intro's of all time. You can learn it here
This epic meditation on mortality is one of my favourite songs by this band. The solo (starting at 8.50) has wonderful expression and is played by my favourite guitarist (Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth)
Tool have been in my life for 10 years now. But over the last 3 years I've listened to them more and more. No one else can touch them for groove and power. Completely unique.
As mentioned earlier, the guitarist and singer of this band is one of my favourite lead guitarist. This atmospheric song is both depressing and uplifting at the same time!
Go in with caution on this one...
A quote from a YouTube comment sums up this song:
"For some strange reason, this song puts me in an extremely peaceful, almost meditative state, whilst also being one of the most violent sounds I have ever heard in my life. "
I hope you enjoy them.
What have I missed from this list? If you're a secret metal/fringes music fan like me I'm always looking for new artists.
Keep on playing,
Drue James
www.LearnGuitarInLondon.com P.S. I've been writing this email for 3 weeks trying to decide who to include. Honourable mentions are Gojira, Mastodon, Skipknot, A Perfect Circle, Lamb Of God and Machine Head.
