I'm insecure
|
Hey ,
on my 40 minute commute to the studio this morning an idea hit me...
Are insecurities a bad thing?
Most of us have them, to some degree.
But they're often seen as negative. Crushing fears that actually stop us from taking action and enjoying life.
However, I see them differently...
I don't know about you but without my own insecurities I would never practice guitar as much as I do.
Don't get me wrong, I do it because I love it!
The expression, that feeling afterwards of immense satisfaction.
But I also do it because I'm afraid I might fail midway through a song.
Afraid I might disappoint whoever is listening.
That probably sounds strange coming from someone who teaches music, but it's the truth.
This fear means I practice more. I memorise more. And I put in the time.
The fear of getting a song wrong doesn't paralyse me from ever picking up the guitar, that's when insecurities can get out of hand.
You need bravery in the first place to learn any new skill, especially something as expressive and performance based as guitar.
I'm not saying all positive action comes out of fear. It certainly doesn't.
I'm just embracing the idea that my own insecurities in guitar can make me learn more. Practice more and ultimately surprise myself with my own achievements.
Embrace your insecurities and put them to work.
Keep on playing,
Drue James
