- Stop comparing yourself to other guitarists.
- Make peace with those songs that you never finished.
- Accept there will be days when you can't practice.
- Enjoy the good times with your guitar.
- Never finish a practice session on a really challenging song.
- Tap your foot, nod your head, sway your body... internalise and embrace your own inner metronome.
- Being uninspired and unmotivated never lasts.
- If you're motivations for learning guitar are strong and sincere you will always return to it. For life.
- In your first year of learning never presume your guitar is in tune. Always check it's tuning at least every other practice.
- If what your playing sounds wrong... it IS wrong. Trust your musical ear.
- If you think you should be better at guitar by now then think how far you've come.
- As time goes on you will naturally attract other like minded guitarists into your world.
- If you're shy and you think someone is listening in to your playing then think of it like this... "They should be lucky to hear me play. They're getting a free show"
- Every beginner finds barre chords challenging. It's not just you. They take a next level of finger strength and commitment.
Keep on playing,
Drue James
