Exotic fruits |
Hey , yesterday I was asked a curious question... It happened when I was telling Lucy that I'd be teaching some of my students for nearly 7 years. She said "Why are they still having lessons with you? Surely they can play guitar by now?" And on the surface her question made complete
sense. When we start learning guitar we think once we've got the basics and we can play a few songs then what more is there to learn. We'll complete guitar (to coin a gaming reference) and then pick it up whenever we feel like it. But as we climb that initial tree trunk of "the beginner stages" we soon start to see other branches. A branch of fingerstyle, percussive playing, barre
chords, music theory, improvisation, and all manner of guitar styles. And just when you think you've climbed one of those branches you then see a new one. And so the journey continues. The learning becomes just as enjoyable as the results. And that's the reason why I'm still teaching one to students all those years later. Sure we can enjoy the fruits of
our knowledge as we gain more experience. But there is always more fruit on the tree. More exotic tastes and combinations. And that's exactly why I sign off my emails with... Keep on playing, |
