Screaming |
Hey , from years of playing in bands and screaming my head off next to drum kits I've developed tinnitus. Tinnitus is that ringing in your ears you get after experiencing loud sounds. I still remember getting it after my first gig when I was 14. When you speak with people about memorable shows the expression of "It
was so loud" is common. Motorhead, Led Zep and AC/DC were all famed for turning it up to 11! In many instances exposure to loud sounds corrects itself over a few weeks. But repeated exposure and high decibel levels (85+) can cause permanent damage. I now look after my hearing at all costs. I've realised that while cranking it up is fun and completely has it's place in music, I want to
protect what hearing I have left. I'm that guy who wears earplugs at live shows. However, not the old school foam ones that sound like you're underwater. There's an entire industry dedicated to earplugs for live shows. The idea being they let in all the frequencies whilst cutting the volume. There's no cure for permanent tinnitus. But as it's just how the brain
is interpreting the hearing signal I believe in the future there will be tech implants that will correct how the brain interprets the damage. My main message today... Look after your hearing. If you'd never heard music you would have never picked up the guitar and started learning. Keep on playing,
