Hey , learning guitar offers everyone "light bulb moments". Those sudden realisations of "This is how to do that" or "That's why this happens". I'm sure you've had some right? As a teacher I never get tired of seeing my students attain these moments. When I'd been learning for 3 years the
absolute biggest one of these moments was through dynamics. Dynamics are how loud or quiet that we play songs. I had one dynamic only! LOUD! I used to hit the hell out of those strings, often breaking them and even making my knuckles bleed on occasion. I was an extremely heavy handed player and I didn't realise it for a long time. The emotional
expression of a song can truly be felt through volume. Also, the more experienced players often have a range of dynamics at their disposal. From deathly quiet to ferociously loud. For now just start with two volume levels. Aim to play as a quiet as you can and then as loud as you can. This can be applied to any style of guitar (fingerstyle, strumming etc) Next once you've established
a couple of volume levels put them into a song. With many songs you normally play the verses quiet and the chorus loud. I was surprised at the difference this made to my playing and I haven't looked back since. For an extra step record yourself playing at these different volume levels. Hear the difference in your guitar. Each acoustic will respond differently with how they sound when
they're played at different volume levels. The next time you practice, think "I'm going to play with the volume today". Choose a song you know well, go for loud and quiet moments and have fun! Keep on playing,
