[DJ] I'm sick of hearing this.

Hi ,

when you joined the LGIL student area I asked you what you found most difficult about learning guitar. I always get some common themes but there's one that trumps them all. Do you know what it is? Drum roll please...

How do I play the dreaded BARRE CHORDS?

They are by far the biggest challenge any beginner will ever face on guitar. I've heard so many stories of people avoiding them. Here's how they normally do it:

  • Changing tuning.
  • Using open versions (that never sound as good btw)
  • Playing the song with a capo.

All this does is postpone the inevitable. Learning guitar without barre chords is like trying to write a sentence when you only know a third of the alphabet. You'll write a few easy words, but you'll only get so far.

Why do you think they're so challenging? It's got nothing to do with short fingers or talent. Nothing to do with huge practice sessions either. I bet that one surprised you.

It's to do with the muscles in your hands. They're just not strong enough YET! How do we make them stronger? We go to the gym.

Not a place to lift dumbbells and do squat thrusts but a guitar gym. All you need is 10-15 minutes a day and you'll have barre chords mastered in as little as 30 days.

Let me show you how...

Keep on playing,

Drue James.
