[DJ] Choose your teacher wisely.

Published: Sun, 04/30/17

Hi ,

picture this scenario...

You're excited about your first "real" guitar lesson. You've decided to take the plunge and book a one to one lesson with a teacher.

When you get there your teacher tells you you've been learning a song the wrong way. They then play the song effortlessly. You're impressed!

But after a few minutes of listening you find yourself thinking "When are they going to stop playing?"

As you're explaining what you've found so challenging they're still noodling away in the background. More interested in their own playing than yours.

Everytime you make some progress your teacher makes it a competition. They keep bringing the lesson back to their playing, back to their story.

Does this sound familiar? If so then please follow this advice:

Choose your teacher wisely.

The moment a teacher makes the lesson about their ego they have failed.

Beware any teacher who plays endlessly in lessons or talks about themselves when it's not appropriate.

This happens more in music than any other form of education.

The lesson should be focused on YOUR progress, YOUR aspirations and YOUR playing.

If your not enjoying each lesson then find a new teacher.

Don't feel bad about ditching your current teacher. They should want what is best for your guitar playing.

Keep on learning (and playing),

Drue James.

P.S. If you'd like to chat about starting Skype Lessons then "reply" to this email with a couple of paragraphs about your playing experience and what you'd like to achieve.
