Hi ,
here's a story about perseverance.
2 years ago I started teaching a man called Terry. He was a complete beginner. He'd just turned 72. And he'd lost 2 of his fingers in an accident at work.
On paper, Terry seemed disadvantaged from the start.
But
he had 2 things that put him ahead of most beginners.
1: He'd wanted to learn guitar his whole life.
2: He'd set a simple goal that he wanted to achieve (involving his wedding)
But things weren't easy for Terry.
He was concerned he was learning too slowly.
He kept asking me if he "had the talent to play".
I would always say, if you're enjoying the journey of
learning how to play music then "yes, you have the talent"
So he kept on playing.
He adapted his playing style to accommodate for his fingers. He had to learn chords differently to most people.
His perseverance paid off.
The following year he played 2 songs at his wedding and achieved his goal. (It's never too late to get hitched.)
There's a lot we can learn from this story.
Physical limitations do not matter.
Setting goals fuels our motivation.
