,
what songs are you learning this week?
Send me a reply and let me know what's on the agenda.
Anyway, on to today's top practice tip.
Speed is a by product of accuracy
Read that last sentence again. It's important that you understand this.
In this world we're told that faster is better.
Be it faster cars, faster computers or faster results.
Whatever it is we respect speed and we hate waiting.
So when people learn guitar they naturally want to play and learn fast.
And this can cause problems.
I've heard countless people play guitar fast but their tone is awful.
What is tone?
Tone is how clearly the strings ring out when they're being pressed down.
When you play something as fast as you can, tone is often the first thing to suffer.
And this leads me on to my practice tip.
It's always better to practice songs slowly
with good tone (accuracy of notes) than fast with bad tone.
The next time you practice a song deliberately play it at half the speed you would normally.
Listen to how cleanly you can get the strings to ring out. No buzzing, no muted notes, no trip ups on chords, fingerstyle
patterns etc...
By slowing down you're giving yourself more thinking time and overall you're making an easier practice session for yourself.
Once you've got your tone sounding clean then you can speed up.
Don't do it the other way around.
Keep on playing,
