Testing my limits
|
Hey ,
Lindsey Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac is an utter animal!
How he executes those 6 string acrobatics us mortals will never know.
It's like trying to copy any of the absolute greats.
You can sort of get there, but you'll never truly emulate them. (Not that it matters in my opinion)
If you've ever tried playing along to Hendrix you'll understand!
But back to Lindsey...
It's his fingerstyle speed that floors me everytime!
For example "Never Going Back Again" from the Rumours album.
I've been toiling over that song for 3 weeks now. Daily practice of around 10 minutes day.
I start slow, (song speed is 87bpm) I start at 60. Then I gradually increase the metronome speed by 4bpm with each run through.
And it's tough...
Especially past a certain speed point.
But when you use a metronome in this way, it helps to push your limits.
By the time I'm even close to his picking speed my fingers are at breaking point.
But breaking point isn't a bad thing.
As long as you make it that far.
Pushing your speed limits into deliberate failure actually teaches our muscles (and brain) to play faster. But only if we do it little and often.
So start slow and aim for a clean tone. Then increase the speed up to your breaking point.
Finally back that speed off and hey presto, you'll feel a lot faster than when you first started your practice.
So Lindsey, while I may never sound like you, I do have a method to get me pretty close.
The lesson for this song will be released soon. (If I have any fingers left!!!)
Keep on playing,
Drue James
