Intense + passionate

Hey ,
my father is an intense and complex person.
As a boy I remember him intently listening to this song in the dark whilst staring at a candle.
So brooding and dramatic.
The song he was listening to has taught me so much about music.
Specifically dynamics.
Listen to it and absorb the sheer force of feeling through loud and quiet within the performance.
Dynamics are the LOUD and quiet in music.
And they can make or break how a song feels to us.
When you've been playing a little longer being mindful of dynamics can really bring your songs to life.
As a start try this...
The next time you play a song that has a repeated section. For example you're playing a second chorus. Just play the repeat louder.
If you can record yourself... listen to the difference. Listen to the rise and fall of the song.
When we listen to someone talking there's nothing more boring than someone who has the same tone, volume and pace in their voice.
And it's exactly the same with our songs. They should represent feeling and emotion. Dynamics are an essential ingredient to that.
Try in now and you'll often be surprised just how loud and quiet you can be.
"To play a wrong note is insignificant; to play without passion is inexcusable." - Ludwig van Beethoven
Keep on playing,
Drue James
