LandlordMax Newsletter - 15 Year Anniversary

Published: Fri, 08/17/18

It's hard to believe LandlordMax was released 15 years ago this month! Yes it's been that long. We're one of the longest running property management software companies on the market today. In fact we're one of only a select few that survived the 2008 real estate crash, and in fact the 2008 really helped us a lot because during that time people really wanted software that offer great value for their money. That was 10 years ago, it's now 15 years and a lot has changed over the years. That's why we're taking the opportunity to post our very first company blog post about the history of the LandlordMax over the last 15 years

Just to give you an idea of timescales and changes in technologies, 15 years ago the iPhone didn't even exist (the first iPhone was released 4 years after LandlordMax), and the iPod was barely a year old. Windows XP was brand new and people wanted to use Windows 98 instead. Google was in it's infancy. Most people still had dialup internet access (remember those AOL cd's). The average computer had 128mb-256mb in RAM compared to today's standard of 8gb (8000mb). The most common screen resolution was 800x600 compared to today's 1080p monitors (1920x1080). In fact High Definition TVs (1080p) were just coming out and barely anyone knew about them. Technology has definitely changed over the years and as a result we've had to adapt many times over.

And not just technologies but the features customers want. Some features that people really wanted in 2003 are no longer relevant and others which never existed in 2003 are very important today. For example mobile support wasn't a thing in 2003, the phone screens were extremely tiny and for example Blackberry was just offering it's first phone with color! But today the biggest feature request of course is that the system be available online on the web as a cloud service. In fact cloud services didn't really exist back then. But today most software is going web and cloud based because of market demands.

Which leads us to the new LandlordMax Cloud Edition. And what a couple of months it's been since the release of the LandlordMax Cloud Edition. Its reception has been amazing! So much so that we're now exclusively offering the Cloud Edition. Our goal was to offer all the Installed Editions (Desktop Edition, etc.) but the demand has shifted so fast that we're now exclusively offering the Cloud Edition. The last version of the Installed Editions will remain available for download by private links for the remainder of the month but after that they will be removed from the website as we transition exclusively to the Cloud Edition due to demand.

The analogy I like to use is the transition between DVD rental movies at Blockbuster to streaming movies on Netflix. Within a 3 year span we saw Blockbuster get replaced by Netflix. Once high speed internet became more popular than dialup more and more people wanted to stream videos rather than go to the store and rent physical DVDs, which may not even be available (remember calling to try to put a movie on hold or asking the clerk to look in the return bin hoping a copy of the movie you wanted had just been returned and not yet put on the shelf). If you look at the timeline of when high speed internet became mainstream, and the compare that to when Netflix started to explode and replace Blockbuster, well let's just say it's very obvious they are clearly linked.

We're seeing a very similar transition today with web based cloud services. The demand is exploding. We could already see it a few years ago but it's been accelerating with time. It's been especially obvious over the last year. And now that we've released the Cloud Edition it's extremely clear where the demand is. We expected the transition to happen eventually taking anywhere from months to most likely years but what we never expected is how quick it happened. Instead of a gradual transition it's more like a switch was flipped with virtually all the traffic transitioning to the Cloud Edition within less than a month. Hence why we're transitioning exclusively to the Cloud Edition.

With that in mind you can transfer your existing database to the Cloud Edition at any time. You can find the instructions on how to transfer your database here and you can see what's new with the Cloud Edition here. And please keep in mind that we also offer a free 30 day trial to the Cloud Edition, even for existing customers as part of transitioning to the Cloud Edition.

And with that we look forward to seeing you online on the Cloud Edition.
