This Week's Blog: Lily Ledbetter & Me

In this week's blog, LWP Christine writes about Lily Ledbetter's fight to end wage discrimination in the U.S., which resulted in the Fiar Pay Act of 2009. Ledbetter's efforts have undoubtedly helped women, but the wage gap still remains large. Women are earning an average of 77% of what men in the same jobs make, which translates to working for free one day a week. Lily Ledbetter waged the war on fair wages, but there is still a long way to go until we achieve pay equality. After reading the blog, share your stories and thoughts about achieving fair pay.

Milestone Monday: Margaret Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher, the first female Prime Minister of England, passed away on April 8th at the age of 87. The "Iron Lady" was a true leader, and a role model for all. One of LWP's favorite Thatcher quotes, from 1982, still rings true today: "In politics, if you want anything said, ask a man. If you want anything done, ask a woman." She will be greatly remembered and sorely missed.

Norway and Gender Equality

Norway has taken great strides towards leveling the gender playing field. Ten weeks of paternity leave is now reserved for Norwegian dads, which gives them family time and reinforces the idea that men do some heavy lifting at home. Norway's progressive child-leave policy also equalizes the hiring field for young men and women, since both are now expected to take the same amount of time off after a child is born.

Learning from Losing?

Losing a job stinks, but it can actually teach you valuable leadership lessons. One lesson often learned after getting fired is that being present with people can get results. Often we rush through the day, and don't really pay the necessary attention to people and/or issues. Showing the people in your network that you appreciate them is an important facet of leadership.

Self-Investment

If you were a stock, would you invest in yourself? Jodi Glickman asks the question we should all consider when wondering about our self-confidence.

Femen Bares All

The feminist group Femen declared April 4th as international "Topless Jihad Day" to support protests against conservative Islamism and in support of Tunisian activist Amina Tyler.
