Serve Others to Save Yourself. Mastery Newsletter February 8, 2017

It ought to be without saying that it is essential to meet our own needs first.

Without fuel in our own tank, it is impossible to be of much use to others.

So, the first step in being of any use to others is to take care of ourselves.

Having said that, sometimes our healing comes from serving others.

Read online:

In The Fear Cure, author Dr. Lissa Rankin relates the story of Andy Mackie.

“Faced with his own looming death after nine heart surgeries that failed to cure him, Andy was on 15 medications as his doctors tried to save his life. But the side effects of the drugs made him miserable. He finally made the courageous decision to stop all his medications and spend his remaining days doing something he always wanted to do instead. Even though his doctors insisted he would die within a year, Andy decided to use the money he would have spent on his heart medicines to purchase 300 harmonicas and give them away to children, complete with lessons from Andy. When he was still alive a month later, he bought a few hundred more. Thirteen years and 20,000 harmonicas later, Andy Mackie finally passed away in 2012. The Andy Mackie Foundation still carries on his vision.

Sometimes what makes us most brave requires us to do something scary not for ourselves, but on behalf of others…

By focusing on the children he would serve instead of his own fear of death, he helped others, and as he did so, his own health improved. Since fear tends to inspire us to reach out to others in order to comfort ourselves, we might as well utilize this natural social inclination to channel our fear into this kind of service. In this way, fear can actually motivate us to make the world a better place.”

The question I ask myself if why wait for disease to do what I really want to do.

Why not serve others now?

Is this what can truly feed my soul at a deep level and help to keep body, mind and spirit in joy, health and energy?

What do you think?
