"Superficial views of the work of Christ produce superficial Christian lives."
[quote by Martyn Lloyd Jones from The Cross, Crossway Books, 1986]

The vision of Christian ministries is to be through the lens of the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ.  In contrast, all worldly religions and philosophies deny or pervert the cross of Christ.

The chief thing on God's heart and mind throughout the whole Bible is His beloved Son and His wonderful saving acts on the cross and through His resurrection.

Therefore, the chief thing in biblical counseling is not to achieve a solution to a personal problem, but to receive a personal knowledge of Jesus Christ through the truths of His cross and resurrection!

It is my calling and my joy to point others to Christ, who alone is the Wonderful Counselor!

Following are some highlights of the centrality of the cross of Christ throughout the Bible.  Always be looking for the cross throughout your Bible.  May we join with the heavenly chorus of angels:  Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, and strength and honor and glory and blessing (Revelation 5:12)!
The cross is rooted in eternity past
"Christ is the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world" (Revelation 13:8).

The cross is revealed at the beginning of the Old Testament in Genesis
Christ is prophesied as the "Seed" who will deal a death blow to the enemy (3:15).

God clothed Adam & Eve with skins from sacrificed animals (3:21).

God received Abel's offering of bloody animals (4:15).

God provided a ram as a substitute for Abraham's sacrifice of his son Isaac (22:8-17).

The cross is pictured 100s of times throughout the Old Testament
Israel's sacrificial system is a foreshadowing of Christ as the final sacrifice...
...and many many other pictures!

The Psalms include Christ's personal graphic testimonies of the cross
Rejected of men
All those who see Me ridicule Me (22:7a).

Rejected by men
I have become a stranger to My brothers (69:8).

Surrounded by enemies
Many bulls have surrounded Me (22:12a).

Pierced with nails
They pierced My hands and feet (22:16b).

His garments were divided
They divide My garments among them (22:18a).

Agonized with thirst
My tongue clings to My jaws (22:15a).

Given vinegar to drink
They gave me vinegar to drink (69:21b).

No bone was broken
I can count all My bones (22:17a).

Committed His spirit to God
Into Your hand I commit my spirit (31:5).

Rose from the dead!!
You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption (16:10a).

Ascended into glory!!
Lift up your heads, O you gates!
And be lifted up everlasting doors!
And the King of glory will come in (24:7).

Isaiah 53 is a poignant foreshadowing of Christ on the cross
He is despised and rejected by men,
a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief (53:3a).

Surely He has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows (53:4a).

He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities.
And by His stripes we are healed (53:5).

All we like sheep have gone astray...
...and the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all (53:6).

He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
so He opened not His mouth (53:7).

And they made His grave with the wicked...
because He had done no violence (53:9).

Yes, it pleased the LORD to bruise Him,
He has put Him to grief (53:10a).

When You make His soul an offering for sin,
He shall see His seed,
He shall prolong His days,
and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper His hand (53:10).

Nearly half of the four New Testament Gospels
is dedicated to the week of the cross
Thus, the Gospels do not focus on Jesus' teachings nor His miracles,
but on His death, burial, and resurrection!

The message of the cross is throughout all New Testament epistles
This message of the cross is that Christ died and was raised for us
AND we died and were raised in union with Christ!

Christ died for us
But God demonstrates His own love toward us,
in that while we were still sinners,
Christ died for us (Romans 5:8).

We died with Christ
For if we died with Him,
we shall also live with Him (2 Timothy 2:11).

Christ was crucified for us
For I determined not to know anything among you
except Christ and Him crucified (1 Corinthians 2:2).

We were crucified with Christ
I have been crucified with Christ;
it is no longer I who live but Christ lives in me (Galatians 2:20a).

Christ was buried
Christ died for our sins according to Scriptures...
and was buried (1 Corinthians 15:4).

We were buried with Christ
In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands...
...and buried with Him in baptism (Colossians 2:11-12a).

Christ resurrected for us
Jesus our Lord was delivered up because of our offenses,
and was raised because of our justification (Romans 5:25).
We resurrected with Him
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who according to His abundant mercy
has begotten us again to a living hope
through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead (1 Peter 1:3).

Even the last book of the Bible is rooted in the cross of Christ
Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive honor and glory! (Revelation 5:12).

Romans 5:10 says that "while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son" on the cross.

Some people believe that they are Christians because they were brought up in a Christian home under the teachings of Christ. However, we do not become "reconciled to God through the teachings of His Son," but we become reconciled to God "through the death of His Son."

Some people believe they will ultimately be "reconciled to God through the love of God." Their logic is "Well I'm not perfect, but God knows my heart and a loving God would never allow me to go to hell."  However, you cannot separate God's holiness from His love.  God is indivisible.  It is in the death of His Son on the cross where God's love and holiness are supremely manifested together, without either one being diminished one iota.

There are thousands of religions and philosophies that claim to know the destiny of mankind.  However, all of these are false because they deny the cross of Christ.

We can only meet Christ at His cross where our sins are exposed and we are drawn to look up into the face of a most gracious Savior.  At the foot of the cross, salvation becomes a marriage ceremony. God the Father gives us away to Jesus!  We join Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection to forever be in union with Him!  The journey into eternal life is only through the cross.

Because of Calvary, Gregg
