Today is Tuesday. While most of us know that the names Sunday and Monday are named for the Sun and the Moon, few know the origin of the name Tuesday.
The origin of the names of the days is from Norse mythology and Tuesday is named for the god Tyr.
Tysdagr - Tuesday
Mars is a god of war, and so is the Nordic god 'Tyr' or 'Tír'. It is Týr who has given his name to Tuesday.
In Norse mythology, Týr is one of the Aesir. He is primarily known as the god of justice and war, but is also described as wise and brave. He is associated with Mars.
The English name is derived from Old English Tiwesdæg and Middle English Tewesday, meaning "Tīw's Day", the day of Tiw or Týr.
It would be interesting to observe whether more disagreements spring up or are settled on Tuesdays.
