Guide to Canine Vaccination
|
|
Around this time of the year, many dog parents may receive reminders from their vets telling them that it's time for those "booster shots" again.
But are booster shots absolutely necessary? And if you have a young puppy, which vaccines are actually essential to protect the puppy from infectious diseases?
What are the recommendations from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), and should you follow their recommendations?
The topic of vaccination has always been controversial, but if we dog parents can stay objective and look at all the facts from research, we can make an educated and informed decision as to what we can do to best protect our dogs.
Please access this article on the very important subject of canine vaccination, and please share it with other dog parents as well.

Homeopathic Remedies for Vaccine Reactions
|
Despite the fact that adverse reactions to vaccines are quite rare, some dogs do experience them - sometimes rather seriously.
If you are going to vaccinate your dog for the first time, or if you know that your dog has had episodes of adverse reactions to vaccines before, it is a good idea to be prepared!
Homeopathic remedies in this regard can be used to protect dogs from developing vaccinosis (vaccine reactions) if you give the remedy to your dog prior to vaccination, or if you give it to your dog immediately after s/he shows signs of adverse reaction.
Examples of Adverse Reaction Symptoms:
- Anxiety
- Coughing
- Diarrhea
- Eye inflammation
- Respiratory issues (e.g. asthma attacks)
- Vomiting
The homeopathic remedy Thuja is effective in alleviating all of the above symptoms. Give 3 to 6 pellets of the remedy to your dog one or two hours after vaccination.
Another remedy that you should have handy is Belladonna. It can be used if your dog develops a high fever after the injection. It can also be used if the dog starts having seizures.

Injection Site Irritation - Hydrosols to the Rescue
|
Sometimes, after an injection, some dogs may develop skin irritation at the site of the injection. The area may become red, itchy and may even be swollen a bit. This is similar to symptoms of a bee sting.
If the irritation is mild but your dog seems itchy, try compressing the area with undiluted Witch Hazel hydrosol. Then apply 3 to 4 drops of undiluted Peppermint hydrosol to the affected area.
This can quickly soothe the itch and irritation and can prevent your dog from scratching and chewing on the area.
NOTE: Witch hazel hydrosol is different from the alcohol-based witch hazel that is sold at drugstores. The hydrosol of witch hazel is alcohol-free and does not irritate the skin.

Product Pick - Stress Gold for Dogs
|
Going to the vets and getting annual checkups and maybe vaccination could be a stressful event to your dog!
Here is a natural herbal remedy for high stress situations, such as vet visits, noises (thunderstorms), traveling, changes in the family, etc.
It contains relaxing herbs such as skullcap, valerian root, lemon balm, passion flower, and more and is effective in relaxing the nervous system of a stressed-out dog.
A must-have if your dog is stress-prone and has anxiety issues (e.g. noise anxiety).

Until next time, enjoy Spring!
"A dog can't think that much about what he's doing, he just does what feels right."
