Rosewood Bangkok

2019 is a huge year for luxury 5 star hotels in Bangok, with a number of highly anticipated hotels scheduled to open this year. The first of this elite class to open their doors was Rosewood Bangkok, which opened in April. We stayed at Rosewood Bangkok soon after it opened and took plenty of photos. You can read my review of Rosewood Bangkok here.

The unique exterior design of the Rosewood Bangkok, with its two connecting high rise structures which are said to be inspired by the shape of hands performing the traditional Thai greeting called a “wai”, is certainly distinctive and has been attracting attention both locally and in the international press. However, while having a unique and visually striking architecture might be enough to catch the eye and grab a few headlines, these alone are not enough to capture the custom and loyalty of travellers in the long run.

I have stayed in many luxury hotels over the years and what struck me during my stay at Rosewood Bangkok was the attention to detail and the quality of the furnishings, fittings and amenities, and this is where I think they will stand out in a crowded market.

Dusit Suites Ratchadamri

  Dusit Suites Hotel Ratchadamri
  Rebranded from Anantara Baan Rajprasong

As of May 1, 2019, Anantara Baan Rajprasong Bangkok Serviced Suites, located in Soi Mahadlekluang 3 off Ratchadamri Road has rebranded as Dusit Suites Hotel Ratchadamri, Bangkok and is under the management and services of Dusit International, of Dusit Thani fame.

This may come as a surprise for guests who have upcoming reservations at the former Anantara Baan Rajprasong, especially if they try to find information about their stay on the Anantara website, where any mention of the property has been scrubbed. Also, a web search of the property name returns a Google listing of the property saying “permanently closed“, with no mention of the rebranding. This may be alarming if somebody with a reservation was to Google to property to find the address to give to the taxi driver from the airport.

Anantara Baan Rajprasong is one of the Minor Group properties in Bangkok offered as a HOT4 free hotel night in the Thai Airways Royal Orchid Plus frequent flyer program. Anybody with an existing reservation, paid or an award stay, will be pleased to know that all reservations are being honored as part of the handover. This may seem like a no brainer, but with no communication being sent out to future guests with reservations, combined with the search results when searching for the old name of the property, it might cause some concern.

Bangkok luxury poised to push through the US$300 ceiling
  From the blog

Bangkok’s luxury hotels have consistently maintained a remarkably low rate profile over the past decade, a phenomenon that is welcomed by luxury seekers in the know, but to Bangkok hotel owners and managers’ chagrin. Thailand has seen a soaring and sustained growth in the tourism industry as well as a strong economy, yet despite these positives, the rates at the top tier hotels in Bangkok have refused to show an increase, instead they have remained stagnant. This is thanks in part to a very impressive pipeline of evermore luxurious properties opening throughout the Kingdom, but particularly in Bangkok.

2018 New Thai Hotel and Resort Masterlist

  New Thai Hotels Master List
Including supplementary list of future projects up to 2022

The 7th Annual New Thai Hotels and Resorts Master List is out now! This is the Go-To list for people both inside the industry and those who simply love luxury hotels and resorts.

With over 30 projects in various stages in the production pipeline and scheduled opening dates going all the way to 2022, it is a must read. As always I will be adding to the list and updating it throughout the year as new information comes in.

2019 has a lot more going on, especially in Bangkok and especially along the banks of the Chao Phraya River. Chao Phraya estate is scheduled to be completed this year and will bring the Four Seasons Bangkok at Chao Phraya- a return to Bangkok for the Four Seasons after a five year break- as well as Capella Bangkok. Both properties are due in the second quarter of 2019, but don't be surprised if there are delays.

Another highly anticipated opening this year is the global debut of the new Orient Express hotel in Thailand's tallest building, the iconic Mahanakhon building- the one that looks like Godzilla took a swipe out of it.

I am very excited this year about the lineup of hotels opening in Thailand and am sure you are too.
