LG Display reports its Q4 2021 financial results, with a 18% increase in revenue from 2020

LG Display reported its Q4 2021 financial results. Revenues increased 18% compared to Q4 2020, and reached $7.3 billion, while net income fell to $150 million down from $500 million a year ago. LGD says that the drop in profit is due to one-off costs related to employee bonuses, and lower LCD panel prices.

For the whole of 2021, LG Display recorded all-time high revenues of $25 billion, with a 23% increase over 2020.

Will Samsung adopt Kateeva's inkjet printers in its next QD-OLED production line?

In 2020 Samsung decided to use inkjet printers made by Korea's Semes, in its QD-OLED production lines. This created a major problem for Kateeva which hoped to win that account, which resulted in massive layoffs including some of its executives. These inkjet printers are used to deposit the QD layer in Samsung's QD-OLED panels.

According to new reports from Korea, Samsung has decided to change course, and rely on Kateeva's inkjet printers in its 2nd QD-OLED production line (the SDC 98.5-Gen Q-2). The reports suggests that the Semes printers do not perform as well as Samsung hopes, and these also cost more than Kateeva's printers (but Semes is affiliated with Samsung, which helped it to get the orders).

CSoT hopes to start supplying AMOLED display for Apple

TCL subsidiary CSoT is, according to report from Korea, interested in becoming an AMOLED panel supplier for Apple's iPhones.

CSoT has shipped sample panels to Apple, produced at its T4 OLED fab in Wuhan. If Apple's review is positive, CSoT will invest in a demo line for Apple, implementing new technologies required by Apple.

New OLED gadget: Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 / 11S / 11 Pro

Xiaomi's Redmi Note 11 smartphone uses a 6.43-inch 90Hz 1000-nits 1080x2400 AMOLED display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 chipset, 4/6 GB of RAM,64/128 GB of storage, a microSDXC slot and a quad camera setup.

The Note 11S offers the same display, but with different specifications (such as more RAM options and an upgraded camera setup). The Note 11 Pro features an improved 6.67-inch 120Hz 1,200-nits 1080x2400 Super AMOLED display.


The Redmi Node 11 series will launch globally in February 2022.

New OLED gadget: Philips OLED807

The Philips 2022 OLED807 OLED TV offers LG's latest OLED EX panels, 120Hz refresh rate, Philips' 6th-Gne P5 AI picture processor, ultra-thin bezels and four-sided ambilight. The TVs are available in 48-, 55-, 65- and 77-inch options.

Other features include Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG, IMAX Enhanced certification, DTS Play-Fi and Android TV 11 OS.


The Philips OLED807 will launch in the first half of 2022.

PolyPhotonix raises $10 million to bring its OLED-based Noctura eye mask to the US

UK-based PolyPhotonix announced that it has raised $10 million from Prevail Partners, which will help the company perform trials for the FDA with hopes to market its Notura eye mask in the US.

PolyPhotonix's Noctura 400 is a sleep mask that uses green OLED lighting panels for a non-invasive treatment for diabetic eye disease (DED). which helps patients with Diabetic Retinopathy. Pioneer supplies the OLED panels for PolyPhotonix.

Researchers use a 3D OLED pixel configuration to increase efficiency by up to 30%

Researchers from National Taiwan University, led by Prof. Chung-Chih Wu, have developed a 3D pixel configuration for OLED devices, which can improve the light extraction. The new design can improve the external quantum efficiency of a top-emitting OLED device by up to 30%.

The new design uses a 3D reflective pixel structure filled with a patterned high-index material. The researchers created several pixels with difference sizes, and found that the smaller the pixel, the higher the efficiency boost.
