David Brooks recently pointed out that Eisenhower reconciled
Republicans to the welfare state, within limits, and that the view of many top
Republicans from Eisenshower to Bush was that America should be a free
enterprise society with a welfare safety net.
Today there is a growing view
among Republicans that this was a bad bargain, that the welfare state has
overwhelmed us and that the limited welfare state model is obsolete.
In contrast, according to Brooks, the Obama view is that the
welfare state was doing great until Republicans ruined it in favor of the rich
during the Bush era.
This is the big divide in the upcoming election.
