QBOTMC News - Attic Window Block, Sewing Blocks, Cornflake Slice and Evening Purse

Published: Tue, 09/11/18

We hope you've had a great week this last week.  It's been a busy one here again, but today
is glorious - our first really warm day, with clear blue skies and a gentle breeze.  My first
three daffodils are flowering now, and I'm loving this start to Spring!

Having said that, we know that Hurricane Florence is about to hit parts of the USA, and
we hope you all stay safe over this next week.  We're sending our very best to our quilting
friends in the Carolinas.

This week's block is an easily pieced one, and looks very effective when you set a few
together and rotate them.

And we have another instalment from Penny Halgren:

"Sewing Blocks in the Wrong Place

It must happen to every quiltmaker at least once in his/her career!  A quilt block is sewn in the
wrong place or upside down.  Hopefully, if it happens, it is discovered long before the quilt top
is completed, let alone when the whole quilt is complete.

However, in my case, it was well after this quilt was complete and hanging on my wall that I
discovered the error.

The quilt was made before I knew about flannel walls, design boards, and the importance of
laying out all of your quilt blocks before beginning to sew them together.  With this quilt and
many before it, I stacked up the blocks, maybe laid them out one row at a time, and hoped that
it came together correctly.

Avoiding this mistake is fairly easy.

Find a place where you can lay out your entire quilt.  One of the best places is a design wall.
If you have a large wall in your house where you can hang a piece of flannel (white or off-white,
no patterns or designs), claim it!  As you design your quilt, you can attach the blocks or pieces,
either using the friction of the flannel or by pinning them.

When you are satisfied with your layout, take them down one row or column at a time, pinning
where you will be sewing.  As you complete a row or column, hang it back on the wall and check
to see if it is correct.  If not, it's a small seam to re-sew."

And for a sweet treat later, why not try this...

3 tablespoons golden syrup (or try honey or molasses)
    4 cups cornflakes
    1 cup desiccated/finely shredded coconut
    4 tablespoons cocoa powder, sifted
    1 cup (150g) icing sugar/powdered sugar, sifted
    250g/ 1/2lb copha/vegetable shortening (or coconut oil)

Method

    Lightly grease a 2cm/1in -deep,10 x 33cm (4 x 13in) loose-bottomed rectangular tart pan.

Step 2
Place the condensed milk, brown sugar, butter, vanilla and golden syrup in a small pan.

Step 3
Cook, stirring, over medium-low heat for 5-6 minutes until mixture is thickened and a golden
caramel colour.  Cool slightly.

Step 4
Place half amounts of the cornflakes, coconut, cocoa and icing sugar in a large bowl. Melt half
the copha in a pan over low heat. Pour over dry ingredients and stir to combine well.

Step 5
Press mixture into tart pan, then chill for 10 minutes. Spread caramel over top, then chill in
fridge for 30 minutes or until caramel has set.

Step 6
Mix remaining cornflakes, coconut, cocoa and sugar. Melt remaining copha as above and mix.
Press mixture over top of caramel. Return to fridge for 1 hour to set.

Step 7
    Slice in pan and serve.
