QBOTMC News - Corn and Beans Block, London Tote and 15 Min Japanese Chicken Noodle Stir-fry

Published: Tue, 10/09/18

We hope you've had a great week this last week.  School holidays have flown by here and
they're back for the last term in only a few more days. We're back to Summer school uniform
again now too (yay!), and this week we started Daylight Saving time as well!  I'm not enjoying
getting up in the dark again, but the afternoons are extended nicely, so all is well in my world.

Our October magazine was sent out a few days ago, and I hope you've managed to download
your copy OK.  Our cover "Crazy Pumpkins" quilt is going to become a 3 month BOM at some
point, but it's all there for you now, and I do hope you have time to give it a go before the end
of this month.

This month's block is a classic, but looks so great when you play with the layouts that I've
included it again for you.

Basic Machine Maintenance tips:  ( from the Burdastyle website)

Change your needles often. This is one of the easiest ways to keep your machine working properly
(not to mention keep your fabric from becoming ruined). A good rule of thumb is to change your
needle after 8-10 hours of sewing or if it has become damaged.

Clean your machine after each project. Even if you're not working with a particularly 'messy' fabric,
small particles of lint can still work their way throughout your machine. Use a small brush to clean
areas such as feed dogs (removing the face plate will help in cleaning thoroughly) and bobbin case.
Compressed air can be used to clean areas such as tension disks, but never blow into your machine
- the moisture from your breath can cause the metal in your sewing machine to rust or corrode.

Oil your machine as recommended by your manual (some machines are self-lubricating and will not
need oiling). Use small drops and only oil designed for sewing machines. Some machines are
self-lubricating and will not need oil

Tighten loose screws.

Keep your machine covered when not in use. This will prevent dust, hair, lint from entering your
machine.

Have your machine serviced by a professional every two years. Not only will they thoroughly clean
your machine, they will check for loose or broken parts, adjust the timing (if necessary) and keep
your machine running smoothly for years!

I just found this recipe and think it's well worth trying for a quick dinner later this week...

15-minute Japanese Chicken Noodle Stir-fry

Ingredients

    3 garlic cloves
    3cm/1in-piece ginger, peeled
    3 green shallots, trimmed
    1 tablespoon peanut oil
    500g / 1lb chicken mince
    440g / approx 1lb pkt wok-ready udon noodles
60ml (1/4 cup) light soy sauce
    60ml (1/4 cup) mirin
    2 tablespoons Tomato Sauce
1 tablespoon caster (fine white) sugar
    1/4 small green cabbage, shredded
1 large carrot, peeled, halved lengthways, thinly sliced
    White sesame seeds, to sprinkle
    Black sesame seeds, to sprinkle
    Sesame oil, to drizzle

Method

Step 1

Finely chop the garlic, ginger and the white part of the shallots. Reserve the green part of the
shallots. Heat a wok over high heat. Add the peanut oil and swirl to coat. Stir-fry the garlic,
ginger and chopped shallot for 30 seconds or until aromatic. Add the chicken mince and cook,
breaking up any lumps and tossing occasionally, for 7 minutes or until golden.

Step 2

Meanwhile, place the noodles in a heatproof bowl and cover with boiling water. Combine the
soy sauce, mirin, tomato sauce and sugar in a small bowl. Thinly slice the green part of the
shallot on the diagonal.

Step 3
Add the cabbage and carrot to the wok. Stir-fry for 1-2 minutes or until the cabbage is slightly
wilted. Drain the noodles and add to the wok along with the soy sauce mixture. Use tongs to
toss until combined.

Step 4
Divide the noodle mixture among serving bowls. Sprinkle with the sliced shallot and white
and black sesame seeds. Drizzle with sesame oil.

This week's bag pattern is an old favourite too.  Please click the link below to download our
London Tote - a good sized over-the-shoulder zippered handbag, with plenty of pockets and
an inner zippered divider.
