QBOTMC News - Diamond Bracelet Block, Christmas Quotes and Shortbread

Published: Tue, 12/11/18

We hope you've had a great week this week!  It's all a bit lazy here this week.  Not me of
course, but Master 14 and Miss 12 have decided that since they're on holidays now, that
sleeping past 9, then watching tv for as long as they can get away with, then asking to get
on their iPads is a perfectly acceptable way of filling in their days.  That's interspersed with
mild bouts of reading actual books, but as for getting outside to play.....?????

It's making me feel old, but in my day (pre-all forms on online technology), we seemed to
be able to find all sorts of other things to do with ourselves.  I've semi-indulged this for now,
but they've had their first few days to completely relax after a busy school year, and it's
not going to continue for much longer.  I wonder what teenage brains will come up with
to do instead???

I fear it's going to be more along the lines of cooking strange things...  Neither child wants
to learn to cook by following anything as mundane as a recipe - they want to 'experiment'
and put in all sorts of things and see what happens. Not thrilled about that - last time
Master 14 did that he made something with flour and oats and milk and sugar, and then
when it didn't look like the Anzac cookies he was trying to remember what went in, he
added a stack of pink food colouring in the hope that it would taste better because it was
violently coloured!!!!  It looked like a pile of mince meat (ground beef) on the tray - hence
it's new name of 'scake' - steak cake!!!!!  I live in fear of such creative genius....!!!

This weeks' block is based on one of those Christmas wishes that you know are just not
going to come true...

The block is really pretty though!

I found these quotes on Christmas, and thought you might get a giggle out of some of them:

The one thing women don''t want to find in their stockings on Christmas morning is their husband.
Joan Rivers

From a commercial point of view, if Christmas did not exist it would be necessary to invent it.
Katharine Whitehorn

You know you''re getting old, when Santa starts looking younger.
Robert Paul

I once bought my kids a set of batteries for Christmas with a note on it saying, toys not included.
Bernard Manning

I stopped believing in Santa Claus when my mother took me to see him in a department store,
and he asked for my autograph.
Shirley Temple

Even before Christmas has said Hello, it''s saying ''Buy Buy''
Robert Paul

Christmas is a time when everybody wants his past forgotten and his present remembered.
What I don''t like about office Christmas parties is looking for a job the next day.
- Phyllis Diller

Mail your packages early so the post office can lose them in time for Christmas.
Johnny Carson

Never worry about the size of your Christmas tree. In the eyes of children, they are all 30 feet tall.
Larry Wilde

He who has not Christmas in his heart will never find it under a tree.
Roy L. Smith

Christmas is a time when kids tell Santa what they want and adults pay for it. Deficits are when
adults tell the government what they want and their kids pay for it.
Richard Lamm

This is always a good Christmas standby in our house -

(Sister's) Shortbread

Combine 1 cup softened butter with 1/3 cup icing (powdered) sugar until fluffy.  Add 1 1/2 cups
plain flour; 3/4 cup cornflour, the pulp of a passionfruit (optional) and a dash of vanilla essence.
Mix until a dough forms.  Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Roll dough 1 cm (3/8 inch) thick and cut to shape.

Cook in preheated moderate (180 degree C) oven for 20-25 minutes.
Glaze with thin icing if desired.

(The dough needs to be quite firm - if it is still a little gooey, add extra flour as needed.)

Suggestion: Cut small bite size shapes, and fill a decorative tin for a very easy and yummy
Christmas gift.

Until Next Week - Happy Quilting!
