Operation White Out: A Mac McDowell Mission by Robert Williscroft

Operation White Out: A Mac McDowell Mission by Robert Williscroft

Recovering from his Operation Arctic Sting injuries, USS Teuthis Executive Officer Mac McDowell is tasked with laying SOSUS arrays in the southern Atlantic and off Thurston Island, Western Antarctica. Teuthis tangles with Argentine subs in the south Atlantic, then confronts a ChiCom sub off Thurston Island. Mac and his team experience serious setbacks at the hands of the ChiComs while installing a relay transmitter on a nearby mountain peak. Teuthis discovers an underwater oil operation off Thurston Island and is tasked with escorting a Taiwanese sub and underwater tanker under the cover of the largest military marine exercise since World War II: PacEx89. Teuthis is attacked by a Chinese Han-class sub and a previously unknown North Korean AIP sub despite the protection provided by three U.S. fast-attack subs. Will Mac and Teuthis complete their mission, or will they finally meet their watery graves on the Pacific Ocean abyssal plain?

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
This is the fourth book in the Mac McDowell Mission Series. These books incorporate my own extensive submarine and diving experience. I was initially inspired to write the bestselling first Mac McDowell Mission titled Operation Ivy Bells in order to tell the complete story of how we tapped into Soviet underwater communication lines. The rest of the books followed as I continued to tell the story of our underwater war with the Soviets during the 1970s and 1980s.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
The members of the TOG dive team are composite personalities of the actual team members. The submarine officers and crew are also composites of the actual people involved in these operations. The higher-lever people are the actual people who played their roles during this time (they are all deceased now). Where necessary, I have created personalities who would likely have actually been in their positions as I describe them.

Sazerac, Sleuth & Slay, An Andi Anna Jones Mystery Book 2 by Mary Cunningham

Sazerac, Sleuth & Slay, An Andi Anna Jones Mystery Book 2 by Mary Cunningham

It’s gonna be a great day! Or, so she thought.

Andi Anna Jones, so-so travel agent, amateur sleuth, doesn’t suspect her least favorite client, Stewart (The Pain) Payne, will set off circumstances that lead to disappearance and death.

After his wife doesn’t show for a convention in New Orleans, his threat to sue Graves Travel for “ten times more than it’s worth”, and Andi’s guilt over a long-overdue promise made to her dad, leads her to The Big Easy in search of Grace Payne.

Four unsolved murders, a body caught in a crawfish cage, and a mysterious candle, magic, and incense shop, leads Andi deep into the bayou on a hunt for clues. Will another victim be added to the serial killer’s list, or is the main suspect closer to Andi than she thinks?

What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Keeping with some excellent advice I got years ago to “write what you know’, the series is loosely based on a horrifying stint I had in North Miami Beach as a travel agent. I hope to exorcise the experience from my memory by giving main character, Andi Anna Jones, a positive course for her curiosity and love of a good mystery.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
Andi Anna Jones is loosely based on me, although she leads a much more exciting and dangerous life.

Her employee in the agency, Ellie, is also loosely based on an agent I worked with in North Miami. Ellen had a Tennessee accent that wouldn't quit.

The Ruby Jones character, Andi's annoying ex-stepmother, came from an old sitcom called "Alice." I imagined Ruby as Flo from that series.
