January Client Letter: Beware Investing Beer Muscles
We are seeing early signs of investors taking on more risk in equities than they can most likely afford. This tends to happen during periods of extended stock market appreciation. During bull markets, investors’ beer muscles come out; but as soon as the next bear market hits, the buzz wears off and nausea sets in. Getting more aggressive in the midst of an extended bull market can lead to undesired and unpleasant results. Read about the strategies we’re employing for our clients by clicking here

Time to Flee?

Are you one of today’s astute Americans who is fleeing the top 10 flight states? Let’s see!

I recently looked over Forbes’ top 10 flight states and agree 100% with this spot-on analysis, so I wanted to put the list in front of you. After you check out the top 10-location losers, click to my Liberty & Freedom map, which helps drive home key issues. You’re looking at a rogues gallery of big government, high taxation, anti-Second Amendment, anti-right-to-work states. I advise you to re-locate from any of these 10 as soon as feasible, with perhaps a summer home as an exception.

Unless Americans do a real turnabout at the midterm elections, America will be on the brink of breaking philosophically into two parts. The center of America will form around a template featuring an ingrained faith and devotion to a Jeffersonian form of federal republic, which emphasizes small government, states’ rights, a strong Second Amendment, low taxes, and a balanced budget. As a cornerstone, this center America block will be against foreign entanglements and in support of an originalist reading of the Constitution. My Liberty & Freedom map will help you quickly envision the sympathetic group of states that might be included in such a philosophical embrace.

As to the Forbes’ top 10 flight states, the only state I would breathe a breath of life into is Maine. Inland Maine is not on my radar, but the coast of Maine is another story. Each summer Debbie and I ride the coast on our Harleys, often running the complete loop from Portland (do not miss Fore Street, one of America’s foremost restaurants) to Rockland, Camden, Blue Hill, Bar Harbor and into Canada.

If you are a resident of any of the flight 10, quickly begin your preparations for departure. Inertia is a tough foe, but when you devote the proper attention to my Liberty & Freedom map you undoubtedly will wish to relocate to the high moral ground.

Ted Nugent to Attend the State of the Union Address

I cannot think of a nastier burr under President Obama’s saddle at the State of the Union address, except a rubuttal speech from Gene Simmons (KISS),which would probably rank right up there with the all time Youtube hits. I would pay cash money to hear Mr. Simmons opine.

The Daily Caller reports that Ted Nugent will be the guest of Congressman Steve Stockman who calls himself the most conservative congressman in Texas.

Musician and outspoken gun rights advocate is scheduled to attend President Barack  Obama’s Tuesday night as a guest of  Texas Republican Rep. Steve Stockman.

“I am excited to have a patriot like Ted Nugent joining me in the House  Chamber to hear from President Obama,” said Stockman, known for floating the  possibility of impeachment over the president’s gun control executive  orders.

“After the Address I’m sure Ted will have plenty to say,” Stockman added.

R.I.P. Donald Byrd

Donald Byrd, one of the leading jazz trumpeters of the 1950s and early 1960s, who became both successful and controversial in the 1970s by blending jazz, funk and rhythm and blues into a pop hybrid that defied categorization, died on Feb. 4 in Dover, Del. He was 80.

Mr. Byrd emerged from the jazz caldron of Detroit in the mid-1950s and quickly became one of the primary instrumental voices of the hard-bop movement, a swinging blues-based style of jazz built around driving rhythms and tight ensemble work.

With a distinctive tone that balanced crisp intonation with a clean melodic line, he was in constant demand for record dates, including sessions with John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, Jackie McLean and Max Roach. He appeared on 36 recordings in 1957 alone.

When Mr. Byrd’s debut album appeared in 1955, jazz writer Nat Hentoff praised him in DownBeat magazine as “one of the most important jazz trumpet talents in the past few years.”

Who is Rand Paul?

The Heritage Foundation welcomed Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) last week to speak about foreign policy. This is not your father’s Heritage Foundation. It is now led by the former Senator from SC, Jim DeMint who you may recognize from his work with the Club for Growth and FreedomWorks.

Rand Paul:

What the United States needs now is a policy that finds a middle path. A policy that is not rash or reckless. A foreign policy that is reluctant—restrained by Constitutional checks and balances but does not appease.

The cold war ended because the engine of capitalism defeated the engine of socialism. Reagan aided and abetted this end not by “liberation” of captive people but by a combination of don’t mess with us language and diplomacy, not inconsistent with Kennan’s approach.

Reagan himself wrote, “I have a foreign policy. I just don’t happen to think it’s wise to tell the world what your foreign policy is.” Reagan’s liberal critics would decry a lack of sophistication but others would understand a policy in having no stated policy, a policy of Strategic ambiguity. If you enumerate your policy, if you telegraph to the Soviets that the Strategic Defense Initiative is a ploy to get the Soviets to the bargaining table, the ploy is then made impotent.

It is time for all Americans, and especially conservatives, to become as critical and reflective when examining foreign policy as we are with domestic policy. Should our military be defending this nation or constantly building other nations? What constitutes our actual “national defense” and what parts of our foreign policy are more like an irrational offense? It is the soldier’s job to do his duty—but it is the citizen’s job to question their government—particularly when it comes to putting our soldiers in harm’s way. And of course, the question we are forced to ask today is—can we afford this?

The Big Box Supermarkets Killing off Americans at a Scary Rate

Debbie and I do not shop for food in the Big Box Supers. Nor do we eat industrial farmed meat loaded with antibiotics (80% of antibiotic use in America is for animals) and growth hormones like estradiol and progesterone. We rely on local farms and small farm co-ops. U.S Wellness Meats is a group we have found to be first rate. Jo Robinson (eatwild.com and Pasture Perfect ) is a monster of a resource. I have spoken with Jo and have learned much from Pasture Perfect. When in New England we rely on Pat’s Pastured.

Thinking confinement-raised meat and antibiotics, here is an item from the legendary Greenmarkets pace setter Nina Planck and her Real Food. Nina writes, “The picture of pigs on factory farms—raised indoors in crowded pens, they cannot pursue their natural impulse to root. Concrete or slatted floors allow for easy removal of manure, but they also cause arthritis and deformed feet. Factory pigs are deficient in vitamin E and selenium, antioxidants found in pasture. Confined pigs are subject to infections, including a fatal form of gastroenteritis; to stave of illness, farmers feed them antibiotics. A strain of salmonella found in swine is resistant to an important antibiotic, fluoroquinolone.”

Nina continues, “Under the stress of crowded conditions, pigs bite each other’s tails and cause infections. To preempt tail biting, factory farmers snip of the tails with wire cutters (without anesthetic), leaving a hypersensitive stump, which pigs work to keep away from the teeth of other pigs. This is called avoidance behavior.“

OK then, confinement-raised meat can be a death sentence for both animals and humans alike. Stick with wild and real free-range products as written about by Jo Robinson, Nina Planck, and, of course, Joel Salatin (Polyface Inc.).  Your family will thank you.
