AUGUST CLIENT LETTER: U.S. Economy Not on Sound Footing
It is our view that the U.S. economy is far from being on sound footing, with potential bubble conditions existing in the stock and bond markets. Considerable blame lies at the feet of the U.S. government and the Federal Reserve. As time passes, economic conditions as measured by GDP continue to look weak, and yet the government continues to borrow from abroad a big portion of what it spends. The debt burden on Americans increases as the Fed continues to debase the currency with its money-printing excess.—Read more by clicking here

U.S.A. #1 Energy Producer

You instinctively know that U.S. energy independence is a good thing for the country. The Wall Street Journal reports, “The U.S. is overtaking Russia as the world’s largest producer of oil and natural gas, a startling shift that is reshaping markets and eroding the clout of traditional energy-rich nations.” Yet the Obama administration has railed against big oil at every turn. Meanwhile, natural gas offers a unique value proposition on an equivalent BTU basis.

The International Energy Agency reports that the U.S. tapped more natural gas than Russia for the first time since 1982. But imagine the missed opportunities because of the Obama administration.

The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth Series Two—#2

150 healthiest foods on earthJonny Bowden, Ph.D., C.N.S., has created one of the most vital books on the health of your family you will ever find, The 150 Healthiest Food on Earth . The lavishly illustrated, 358-page weighty tome gives you more vital information on foods that can keep your family healthy than any other publication I have ever come across. And I am always on the look out. I have given the book to family members and often advise it for others. I have now selected a “Great 10” list of food choices to share with you. My goal here is pass on ideas that perhaps you did not previously know about.

Almonds: Almonds are rich in heart healthy monosaturated fat—about 70% so. Almonds are high in protein, dietary fiber, phosphorous, calcium, vitamin E, and magnesium. Almonds contain few carbohydrates and, as Jonny points out, are the perfect food for diabetics and those with blood sugar issues.

Government Shutdown Reality

First off, the government is far from shut down. Most of the essential services Americans rely on day to day will continue, so pay no attention to the media hysteria and headline grabbers. In large measure, what gets shut down is whole swathes of fat and waste that should never have been allowed to exist from the start. Here is an example you can relay to all your terrified liberal friends who are panicked or enraged over the folly of shutdown.

We have in America approximately 1.2 million farmers and ranchers. At the Department of Agriculture, there are approximately 106,000 government bureaucrats. The numbers work out to one bureaucrat for every twelve farmers or ranchers in the country. Is there a single American who does not believe that thousands, if not tens of thousands, of Ag bureaucrats could not be sliced from the rolls with zero effect on the country?

Here Pat Buchanan lays out the shutdown reality for you. The Republicans have twice voted for funding of all government agencies and programs except Obamacare. Americans do not want Obamacare, and Republicans are correct in continuing to oppose funding. But Harry Reid would not accept the trade off. As a result, a partial government shutdown is now in place, as should absolutely be the case. Obamacare is a job killer and a functional nightmare that must be repealed.

Tell Your Liberal Friends to Shut it Down

I had the great pleasure of spending time talking with Chris Edwards, Director of Tax Policy Studies, over the weekend at the Cato 200 Laguna Beach, CA retreat. In his talk he referenced downsizing government.org as a wonderful reference tool. And that it is. The charts are sick. Literally. You can pick and choose your favorites to show your liberal friends. It will help you get your point through their thick skulls.

Anyway, I checked it out yesterday. I wanted to see what was up with the department of Agriculture. You would think that with advances in technology by companies like John Deere making farming more efficient the same might be true for the Dept. of Ag. Right? That obviously hasn’t happened. Take a look at this Cato downsizinggovernment.org chart of federal spending by the Department of Agriculture from 1970-2013. The only way to save money in government is to shut it down.

80,000 Pages of Federal Regulations

rules and regulationsThe government deploys 456 federal agencies to manage the federal regulatory beast. Thomas Jefferson never intended this intrusive, suffocating beast that is today’s federal government. And Jefferson certainly would not have lost much sleep over a partial shut down in Washington. Here the Cato Institutes Michael Tanner adds perspective.

According to calculations by Harvard economics professor Greg Mankiw based on data from the Office of Management and Budget, roughly 60 percent of Americans receive more in government benefits than they pay in federal taxes. A Tax Foundation study suggests that, after President Obama’s health-care law is implemented, as many as 70 percent of Americans are net recipients of government largesse. Nearly a third of Americans receive more than half their income from the government.

There are also more than 80,000 pages of federal regulations, overseen by some 456 federal agencies, and more than 4.3 million federal employees. We have become a nation of Julias, the Obama campaign’s fictional woman whose every life decision was subsidized, regulated, or directed by government. One can certainly see how a government shutdown would strike terror in her life.

To all this, the president would add Obamacare — 2,500 pages of legislation and more than 12,000 pages of regulations, giving government control over another one-sixth of the U.S. economy.

And it’s only going to get worse. According to the Congressional Budget Office, by 2050 the federal government “will continue to grow faster throughout the rest of the century, eventually reaching levels that are completely untenable/incompatible with economic growth and prosperity.”

Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals — Maximize the People’s Pain

Barack Obama and Harry Reid are 100% responsible for the current government impasse. With nothing but spite in mind, they have gone as far as yellow-taping off the WWII Memorial, thus blocking veterans from what could be their last visit. Republicans have made a continuing effort to reverse such conditions, but have been stonewalled. Here Pat Buchanan asks what kind of a sick person would seal off the WWII Memorial. Pat is correct in telling Americans that the Obama/Reid strategy is a page right out of Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals.
